    Good Afternoon

I’m having a problem with ‘likes’ on people’s blogs today. After clicking on the ‘like’ button, my gravatar appears under the post as normal. However, the posts I liked didn’t show up on my blog under ‘Blogger’s posts I like’.

I logged back in later, and all the ‘likes’ I had given earlier today had gone. I’ve just tried to like the same posts and the same thing has happened again.

The blog I need help with is thelanternroom.wordpress.com.

    Hi there,

Can you please provide a link to a post where your like is not showing, and that is not showing in the widget?

Please try clearing your browser cache and cookies, and make sure that third party cookies are allowed in your browser settings. Then log in and like a post again to see if it still happens.

Keep in mind that there can be a delay between liking a post and the post appearing in the widget on your site.

    Hello there

None of the likes I posted yesterday worked – or showed up in the widget. Just now, I have ‘liked’ 2 posts to see what happens, and the likes haven’t ‘stuck’. They appear and then disappear when I refresh the pages.

Cache and cookies are cleared, and third party cookies are enabled.

Here are the links to the 2 posts that I tried to like this morning:

    https://lichtyears.com/2018/02/08/pausing/

    Many thanks.

Okay, I tried liking both those posts as your account, and now it appears to have stuck, which still points to your browser as the source of the trouble.

What browser are you using? Some browsers like Firefox and Opera now have built in tracking protection that prevent websites from tracking you even if you have cookies enabled. That might prevent Likes from working correctly, as we need to be able to track your login to a different site than your own for likes to work.

Please make sure such a setting is not perhaps active in your browser, and if you have any privacy extensions like Privacy Badger installed in your browser, try disabling that and see if it helps.

Can you please visit this page for me and take a screen shot of the info that appears there:

    http://supportdetails.com/

Please upload that directly to your site’s media library at My Site ->Media. I’ll be able to view it there,

If you have another browser installed on your computer, or you’re willing to download one to test, can you please try logging in with a different browser and check if your likes are still removed in that case?

And is this only happening if you like a post on the site itself, or does it also happen if you like a post via the WordPress.com Reader?

    Hello again kokkieh

Many thanks for looking into this for me. I do have tracking protection enabled on Firefox – have done since they introduced it. I hadn’t – up until now – had problems using WordPress with it, but it seems as if the new conversations facility on WordPress – and perhaps other new changes – have affected my useability on the site with the tracking protection enabled.

I prefer to visit the blogs themselves to like and comment but tried your suggestion of liking through the reader, and the likes stuck.

I’ve therefore decided to compromise. I don’t want to faff about adjusting the Firefox tracking all the time, so I’ll like from the Reader, and then visit the blog.

    Thanks again.

You can set an exception for Firefox’s tracking protection to exclude certain sites. If you want to try that, I’d suggest you add both wordpress.com and *.wordpress.com as exceptions. FF will probably still block our tracking attempts on sites with custom domains, but that way Likes should work on at least some sites.

As for the issue only starting now, an old tracking cookie was likely still active in Firefox, and when that cookie expired Tracking protection prevented us from setting a new cookie.

    Hello again

I went into the Firefox preferences again to add the wordpress websites to exceptions, as advised, but the pop up box didn’t allow any websites to be added. I then noted that I didn’t have Tracking protection ticked as ‘Always’, but as ‘Only in private windows’. The Firefox website itself didn’t show me as having Tracking protection enabled – so I’m now at a loss as to what the problem is.

All I can say is all my Firefox settings are the same as they have been for months but my problem with WordPress likes started yesterday.

With regard to cookies, Firefox clears them after each Firefox session.

Please let me know if you need further info. It seems a complete mystery.

    An update to the issue:

This morning I have removed everything to do with tracking protection via Firefox preferences, and the problem persists. My likes don’t stick when placed directly onto the blog but do stick when placed via the Reader.

    #3073316

Just for your information: I’ve been experiencing the same problem for about two or three days too, across browsers.

    A further update this morning:

We’ve tried some tests on Firefox here at home. We compared three versions of Firefox to see if the ‘like’ problem was the same in each. The versions are as follows:

    1. The current version of FF 58.0.1
    2. The current version of FF with no changes to settings whatsoever – a complete virgin download
    3. The Firefox for ESR version 52.6.0 fully updated

As stated above – the likes do not stick when viewing the blogs but do stick when viewing the snippets in the Reader.

It does, therefore, look like a WordPress issue rather than a Firefox one I think.

It’s possible that a lot of people are having the same problem but might not notice unless they either have the widget on their own site or obsessively check back on likes later on. Because the gravatar appears when the Like icon is clicked, they won’t know it hasn’t ‘stuck’ and that it disappears when the site has been closed.

Thanks for adding your voice to the thread. I was surprised that nobody else seemed to be reporting the problem!

    #3073321

I was partly mistaken: The problem does NOT occur in MS Edge. In Vivaldi, however, the gravatar doesn’t appear when the Like icon is clicked, and consequently, the Like isn’t registered.
I guess that since the majority of people are using MS browsers, this isn’t a widely experienced problem. Nonetheless, the issue should be reported to the browser developers.

I use Firefox and like posts daily with no problems at all. I also checked using your account, and several test accounts, and am not able to replicate the issue. I also have not seen any other reports of this, so everything still points to your local environment.

Have you tried using a different internet connection? It could be an issue with something stuck in your computer or router’s DNS cache that’s preventing the request fired off when you click on Like to reach our servers correctly. Unplugging our router for a few seconds should clear it’s cache. Please search Google for the instructions for clearing the DNS cache for your computer’s specific operating system.

    @michaelmeiser

Can you also please try clearing your browser cache, and also flushing your router and computer’s DNS cache.

Else it sounds like Vivaldi might not be loading all the code that the Like feature uses to work. If that’s the case you should see errors when viewing the JavaScript console in that browser while liking a post.

However, we do need to prioritise in terms of browser support, and given that Vivaldi’s current market share is less than 0,05% of internet users it’s not feasible for us to spend time on optimising our code specifically for that browser.

You can find info on our supported browsers here:

I’ve also asked a developer to look at this and he made an adjustment on our end that might help with this. Can you please check if things work now in Firefox?

    @kokkieh

I’ve just tried to ‘like’ two blogs in the usual way via the blogger’s sites – have refreshed the sites – and it has worked. They are showing up in my widget too.

Thank you very much for your help.

Out of curiosity, are you able to say what the issue was?

    #3073366

The issue is that FF sometimes returns a null value for a JavaScript function we use in the Like button code. We’ve added a check for that, and that appears to have fixed things.

    Hi @kokkieh,

I am also having problems with my viewers “Likes” not registering on my posts. I want to find out if a viewer needs to have a wordpress account before their “likes ” can reflect?

    Thank you

Hello there, in order to Like a post on your site, your site visitor needs to be a logged-in WordPressdotcom user. More about that here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/likes/
