Mapping a .ie domain to wordpress - changing DNS

  1. Hi there,

I've been struggling for weeks to figure this out. I bought a .ie (Irish) domain with register 365 - http://www.mollydoll.ie and I need to map it to WordPress by changing the nameservers to what's provided by WordPress (NS1.WORDPRESS.COM, NS2.WORDPRESS.COM, NS3.WORDPRESS.COM)

This isn't working for me and I keep getting an error message from the hosting company. Do I need to alter some other DNS settings within WordPress? Any advice or help much appreciated!

    Many thanks,
    Maria.

  2. You have to purchase the domain map upgrade ($13.00 per year) by entering the domain you already own in the map a domain page.

Then you have to change the nameservers to the WordPress.com ones by visiting the control panel of your registrar (Register365).

It can take a few hours for your domain name servers (DNS) to update fully. You will also likely need to clear your browser’s cache.

  3. You can read the support documentation of the whole process here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

  4. Hi fstat,

    Thanks for the reply.

I have tried to map my domain on the page link you provided, but I am being told: 'Sorry but mollydoll.ie has not been registered yet therefore cannot be mapped.'

The site is purchased. Do I need to transfer the domain away manually first perhaps from Registrar 365?

    Thanks for your help,
    Maria

  5. By examining your domain's WHOIS record, I see that it is registered through Register365 since 28 September 2015.
I don't think there is a problem with your domain, therefore I'll tag this topic for staff assistance.

  6. Hello @mariamccabe87 -

I'll be happy to help you out with this.

What WordPress.com site were you looking to map the domain mollydoll.ie to?

  7. Hi @bruceallen, I'm having the exact same issue with my domain.
I've registered talhotradicional.pt and when trying to map it, i'm receiving the message "Sorry but talhotradicional.pt has not been registered yet therefore cannot be mapped". From the provider I received the message "DnsException: Error #4;The server is not autoritary for the domain;ns1.wordpress.com".
Could you please help me too?

  8. @bmofreire -

I've mapped the domain for you and set it to expire in a week. Before then can you go in a renew it for the full year?

Then you should be able to update the nameservers to point to WordPress.com.

  9. @bruceallen, thank you for your quick reply!
    I'll do that right now!

  10. Hi @bruceallen,

Thanks for helping out with this. I want to use wordpress as my CMS and I have tried to map it here: https://wordpress.com/domains/add/mapping/ - but wordpress tells me the site is not registered. I already tried to change the nameservers with my hosting company (using the wordpress nameservers provided) but I received error auto response emails.

    I have since contacted my hosting company and here is their advice;

"With regards to changing the nameservers, I can see that you have done that correctly but the problem is that there is no reference (DNS) to your domain name on the new servers so the change is being rejected. If you wish to try this again then please contact WordPress first and ask them to make sure that the DNS records for your domain are setup on their servers."

Could you please help with this?

    Many thanks in advance!
    Maria.

  11. Hello Maria -

Can you try to create your site first by following these steps:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/create-a-blog/#adding-a-new-site-to-an-existing-account

But don't try to add the custom domain just yet. So you'll be creating a site that is probably something like mollydolldotcom.wordpress.com and then once that is done, I may have to come in an manually map your mollydoll.ie domain to the site for you.

  12. Hi @bruceallen,

Similar to the guys above I need a zone record added for the domain scoilmobhi.ie. Can you arrange this ?

    Thanks - Enda

  13. Hello @farrellenda -

Just to clarify, it's a domain mapping you're looking to add, is that correct?

  14. Hi @bruceallen - the current site is scoilm.wordpress.com, I have domain mapping in the €99 package paid for but I am getting an error on trying to change the name servers with my domain registration supplier. It seems that the zone record is all that is needed. Thanks - Enda

"Update of name servers for domain scoilmobhi.ie failed: Could not push update of 'http://blackreg.com/v1/domains/scoilmobhi.ie': Bad Request. Could not service request, correct request and try again: Parameter value policy error [While checking Nameserver hostname for nameserver: ns1.wordpress.com for domain: scoilmobhi.ie ns1.wordpress.com is not authoritative for zone scoilmobhi.ie. While checking Nameserver hostname for nameserver: ns2.wordpress.com for domain: scoilmobhi.ie ns2.wordpress.com is not authoritative for zone scoilmobhi.ie. While checking Nameserver hostname for nameserver: ns3.wordpress.com for domain: scoilmobhi.ie ns3.wordpress.com is not authoritative for zone scoilmobhi.ie.] [Error/status code: 400] "

  15. I added the mapping in for you. That should allow the registrar to change the nameservers on their end.

  16. Fantastic, thanks @bruceallen.

  17. Hi bruceallen - I've now setup the wordpress site you can see here: https://mollydollblog.wordpress.com/

    Thanks for your help.
    Maria.

  18. Hello again Maria -

I've mapped your domain to that blog and set it expire in a week. Before then can you go in and renew it for the full year?

You'll then need to update the name servers with your domain registrar. This article explains how:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

The name servers for WordPress.com are:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM

    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM

    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

If you're not sure how to change them, please contact your registrar for assistance.

Once you have updated the name servers, it may take up to 48 hours for the domain to be pointed to your WordPress.com site.
