migrating from wordpress.org to wordpress.com

  • trying to “downsize” my blog… no longer want to pay for self hosting. I downloaded an XML file from my .org tools.

In the .com tools, clicked the “wordpress” import link. It did not give me the option to choose the source – just says “processing” and indicates it will email when complete.

It’s been about 24 hours… can’t tell if it’s actually doing anything or not. Suggestions?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Could you please send us the .xml file by e-mail? this way we can give it a try.

    Looking forward to your reply!

  • file is on the way. Thanks!

  • The import is done. Please let us know if you need any further assistance!

  • Excellent, thanks!

A few formatting questions. Can the share buttons be moved to the top of the post?

On some posts, redundant “featured images” appear above the headline – can this be turned off?

How do you adjust the home page so only summaries or thumbnails appear instead of full posts?

    Thank you for your help!

  • Trying to mimic the experience at http://www.oldwaver.com as closely as possible. I know wp.com has limitations vs .org, but hoping for some pointers to make it as good as it can be.

    Thanks

  • Can the share buttons be moved to the top of the post?

On all WordPress.com themes sharing button appear at the bottom of the post, above the commenting section.

On some posts, redundant “featured images” appear above the headline – can this be turned off?

This is how your current theme works. Feel free to try out other themes that are listed at http://themes.wordpress.com

How do you adjust the home page so only summaries or thumbnails appear instead of full posts?

You can truncate your blog entries so that only the first part of certain posts is displayed on the home and archive pages. When you do this, a link will be placed directly after your excerpt, pointing the reader to the full post.
