Missing Customizations such as Header Image, Background, Menus

  • Our team launched a change earlier today that caused problems for customizations you made to your site’s appearance, such as custom header images, custom backgrounds, and custom menus. We’re very sorry for the disruption in your site’s appearance. We fixed that problem, and most sites are now back to normal.

If any of your site’s customizations are still missing, you can open your site’s Customizer and re-save those customizations now.

If you are having trouble reactivating your site’s customizations, please reply to this thread so we can help you with that. Please include a link to your site and details about what customizations you are having trouble saving.

If you are having any other trouble with your site that is not related to the settings in your site’s Customizer, please start a new forum thread with your question. Thanks!

  • Please note that if you are previewing the Custom Design features on your site, you will see a message like this in the “Colors & Backgrounds” section of your site’s customizer:

This feature is a part of the Premium Plan. Purchase to make it live or exit the preview.

You don’t need to upgrade to Premium to change your site’s background. However, you will need to exit that Custom Design preview before you can save changes to your site’s background color. You can do that with these steps:

    1. Open your site’s Customizer
    2. Open the section called “Colors & Backgrounds”
    3. At the top of that section, look for the text “This feature is a part of the Premium Plan. Purchase to make it live or exit the preview.”
    4. Click on “exit the preview” to exit the Custom Design preview.
    5. Open the “Colors & Backgrounds” section again and set the custom background for your site.
    6. Click “Save & Publish” at the top of the customizer.
  • Hi Rachel, my site is edenbaylee.com and I’ve lost both my left and right hand side menus.

    Can you please restore?

    eden

  • @edenbaylee — That was actually an unrelated issue, caused by stray HTML code in one of your blog posts. I fixed that for you using the troubleshooting tips on our HTML Troubleshooting page. :)

  • Hi Rachel! My blog seems to be back to normal now–saved my header photo and background color, hope it holds steady–so thank you very much! (I remember you from an earlier blog I had–hope you’re well.) Valida @ Wealth of Ruins

  • Hi Rachel, awww, thank you so much! Apologies for thinking it was related to your changes. I will make sure to check my HTML next time if I encounter a similar issue.

    Have a great day,
    eden

  • Hello Happy Rachel! Long time since I haven’t been here :D
I’m having problem launching the customizer, and when I finally can my blog still looks virgin. Can you kindly help out: http://yummymommyparis.com

    Thank you!

  • Hello. Header is back. But menus still gone… My blog is http://maquinadeescrever.org

  • Hello!
Today in the morning something happened and the font of my blog changed to its default one. From what I saw, this happened to every wordpress blog I have known. After 15 minutes everything went back to normal, except for my blog, because throughout that time, I had been trying to fix the “problem” I had discovered.
Now my font is stuck to its default background.
Does anybody know how I can change it? When I enter my control panel, it looks like it allows me to do all the changes I want, but when I turn to my blog’s look it is stuck to the pre-elected one.
Any ideas? What should I do?
    Thank you in advance!
    Ps: My blog is:

  • I did exactly this:

    Open your site’s Customizer
Open the section called “Colors & Backgrounds”
At the top of that section, look for the text “This feature is a part of the Premium Plan. Purchase to make it live or exit the preview.”
Click on “exit the preview” to exit the Custom Design preview.
Open the “Colors & Backgrounds” section again and set the custom background for your site.
Click “Save & Publish” at the top of the customizer.

And now is OK!!! Thank you very much!!!

  • Hi there,
I had the same problem: couldn’t put back my own background. I followed @konvardis steps and it works now.
    Thank you.

  • Good morning.

To say I am unimpressed by what has happened here would be an understatement. We are a small volunteer society in the midst of a large marketing campaign for an upcoming society. Whatever has been done has scrambled our site, making it extremely difficult to navigate.

    Our site: http://ancestralhealthnz.org/

    Our menus are scrambled.

We have default header images throughout the site where there used to be none.

I would appreciate if someone is able to restore this site to how it was previously, so that I don’t have to spend the next few hours stumbling around trying to figure out what has been done and how to fix it.

  • I have managed to recover our settings. Hopefully there won’t be any further disruption to the site moving forward.

  • @yummymommyparis — Hello! Sorry you have to return to the forums for a problem like this. :P I checked your blog at http://yummymommyparis.com and it looks like you were able to re-save your customizations. Is anything still missing there?

@maquinadeescrever2015 — I see you have several Custom Menus set up for your site, but they aren’t activated right now. You can reactivate them by selecting them in the “Navigation” section of your site’s Customizer.

If you have trouble with that, can you please tell me what you expect to see in your site’s menu areas? That will help me fix that for you.

@konvardis & @sangeles — I’m glad those steps fixed it for you; thank you for letting me know!

@thatpaleoguy — I’m very sorry for the trouble this caused you, and I’m glad you were able to recover those settings. Our team is working to do what we can to avoid this kind of problem happening again.

  • Hi Rachel! Thank you for coming back to me this fast.
I got the blog back running with header and customs, also checked the menu bars, and it all seems to work fine. But it all takes very long to upload when visiting the page. Is this normal for tonight? Maybe too much wordpress traffic.

    Bests fro Paris :*

  • Last night my template (Pilcrow) went back to default and my menus were a mess and a few other things went wrong. I managed to correct the bulk of them so the site was readable again.
But my blog 13thfloor.co.nz still does not have its background image… and there is no option in customisations now to insert one. For a while last night I did have an option of inserting the image, but the text was directly on it (the reading area is meant to be white, with the image behind)
I don’t know how to fix this. I sent a message via my site’s “leave us a message option” but I never here back from you when I leave a message there…
I am the site’s admin, not the owner and really need some help with this!

  • The navigation menu, normally appearing above my “Follow” widget, has disappeared — although all the details of the menu are still recorded in the appearance section of the dashboard.

Also, some aspects of the CSS appear to have changed, although the CSS changes are still intact… (E.g., the header text has changed colour, though I have made no changes to the color in my CSS. Consequently it now difficult to see.)

  • Hey, there. While the instructions in this topic have been somewhat helpful, they haven’t quite fixed my problem. I was able to change the color of my links to red and gotten it to appear on the blog, but the headings keep reverting from green back to white. Also, I no longer have away to change the colors of my site title and tagline. Amazing how a couple of little things can make a site look so different. I’m probably just missing something obvious, but I’d really appreciate some help. I’m using the 2011 theme, if that helps at all. Thanks in advance!

  • Hi,

Is there any way to revert to the original colour combination without having to remember all the colours?

    Thanks!
    Rachael
