    Hi all,

I had my wordpress.com blog, and things were great. Good traffic, nice features etc. However, I want to actually earn a bit from the blog with some adsense ads and one or two other promotional items.I also wanted a bit more flexibility with themes and plugins in the future.

So I setup a .org hosted blog on my server. I transferred all the posts etc. and everything is running fine.

The problem is that all Google links go to the .com blog. And the names of the blogs are similar. islandgamers.wordpress.com and blog.islandgamers.com.
What is this going to do for traffic? Should I place a post saying that we’ve moved on the .com blog?

Definitely place a post telling people you have moved. I would consider removing all the old material from the wp.com blog, too, so Google doesn’t spider it anymore.

But if I do that, won’t all the links break? If other people had ping-backed to me etc?

Yes, they will break. That’s what happens when you move. Also, you start from zero with regards to Google checking the new site, and start again building a Technorati ranking as well.

If you leave the content up, Google will downgrade you for having duplicate content.

Here’s my advice. Mirror sites are allowed and do provide a great back-up. So why not mark the wordpress.com blog as private to keep the search engines out and create a mirror site? https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=12654

What you want is a 301 redirect. I am afraid that WordPress doesn’t offer it. I could be mistaken though.

(You may be able to upgrade and insert a php 301 redirect but I’m not sure if wordpress will do php or not.)

Don’t keep the content up, you will probably get penalized, and/or your old blog will “steal” all traffic to your new blog.

That will not work at WordPress.com. Ever.
