Moving hosts, how to set up domain on WP?

  • I am 2 weeks away from having my current webhosting plan run out, and want to get set up on WordPress for a small site. I have a domain already owned, and I believe I have followed all the steps I need to do to prepare it for transfer.

I want to sign up for the Personal plan on WP, but every time it asks me to name my site, it doesn’t let me choose my already-owned name, which I completely understand why it’s not. But I also don’t want to choose another name and waste my domain name credit in any way. How can I ensure that I can create my WP site and attach the domain name I own to it?

Or is there some other full-site transfer method that I should go about?

  • Hi @mynameisdween,

There are a couple choices you can do with WordPress.COM in regards to transferring your domain.

    1. Transfer your domain to WordPress.COM
    2. Domain Map your existing domain

You can read more about these choices here:

    But my issue is this:

Should I go ahead and start building a WordPress site, and just pick a random name for it? I can’t seem to get the wizard to offer me a abcxyz.wordpress.com site, it always wants to give me something like yourwebsite.blog or your-web-site.com. Am I going to be able to change the domain name easily? And if I go with the Personal plan, will WP then let me use my owned domain for ‘free’ as part of the plan from here on out?

  • Hi @mynameisdween,

    Thank you for the clarification!

I can think of a couple things you could do, but want to ensure that you are assisted in the most correct manner. I have tagged this thread with “modlook” so that the wonderful WordPress staff are notified and are able to assist you further.

Thank you for your patience :)

  • @mynameisdween I understand you want to set up the site here and move the domain over later, correct?

You can always map it when you’re ready. I would just pick some free wordpress.com address, and build it from there.

Thank you all for the assistance. I went back to build a site, and had to type in a wordpress address to force it to let me choose a free domain name. The allowance of a provided domain name is a bit confusing, as everything keeps pointing towards “Premium” for a provided domain name. I double checked the pricing guide, and the “Personal” plan provides it just the same. So it looks like I’m good to go.

Once I’ve built the site and mapped it over, I hope to mark this resolved. I appreciate everyone’s time and help!

  • @mynameisdween Awesome!
