Moving to GoDaddy/ Sorting out domain
I took the plunge last week to buy a domain name from GoDaddy. I don’t have much money so went for as low a plan as possible which has backfired and left me a bit confused as how to progress further. I used forward domain with masking so that my domain is in use, but then discovered (hopefully I’m not the first this has happened to) that it doesn’t mean my individual blog posts will work under the bybrad.co.uk domain and it instead masks the entire site.
I’m using WordPress.com on a free plan – speaking to a GoDaddy agent earlier he said I’d definitely be having to pay somebody to get what I want.
What’s the best way to go from here? How do I cheaply move all my content from wordpress.com to be hosted by GoDaddy? Can I somehow export my site from .com to .org and then just pay GoDaddy for the hosting? From what I could determine from the phone call, one of my options would be to temporarily buy a plan from WordPress so that plugins can be used & the site can be taken over to GoDaddy – but that would mean I’m paying two companies when surely there’s a way to just pay one.
I would appreciate any and all help. I’m a little out of my depth on this one.
The blog I need help with is bybrad.wordpress.com.
WordPress.com provides the Export tool to export all your content to a file. You can then use the file to import to your self-hosted WordPress (org) site.
Something to take note from the support document I sent above:
This will ONLY export your posts, pages, comments, categories, and tags; uploads and images may need to be manually transferred to the new blog.
In this way, you only need to pay GoDaddy for the domain and hosting fee.
Do let us know if you have further questions, we’ll be glad to help.
