yes you can. just go to http://wordpress.com while you’re logged in, it will list your blog and click the link to sign up for another one.

Just trying to clarify – a visitor to my main site ( in this case http://lmighton/wordpress.com ) does not see or have access to any additional blogs I have, unless I have placed a link to it within my main blog’s text – is that right?

Correct. You do get a list of them though when you log in at the main wp.com site as well as with your admin bar along the top though.
