My customizer will not let me change the color of my header text, even though I've always been

In every theme I’ve used on WordPress, when I changed my header photo, the page also let me change the color of my header text, so they would match. Now your instructions say that the customizer will let me do that under the ‘Colors’ section, but it will not. It will change the color of other headings — such as post titles — but it won’t give me a place to change the header text separately.

I also think it stinks that you give us a link that says ‘Contact Happiness Engineers,’ but when we get to the page, you have us turn in a question to the public forum instead. That has rarely been any help in the past. I generally just get answers from other bloggers who are just as confused or aggravated as I am. When I first started with WordPress (I have 4 blogs here, but each is under a separate e-mail) you guys were really great about help. When we had a problem, your happiness engineers would e-mail us and actually give us help. But this whole process has now become totally discouraging and unreliable.

The blog I need help with is sandraconner.wordpress.com.

I have been answering questions here f over 9 years now and not every theme allows for a free change of header text color. In many themes, perhaps even most themes, CSS editing is required to change it.

I have Able up on my test blogs https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/able/ and I am in the customizer and that option for color chnage in header text does not appear to exist in that theme.

I’ve used the Able theme for over a year, and I have always been able to change the color of my header text in that theme without purchasing anything. In fact, I changed it just about a month ago. So this failure to offer that option is a brand new thing on this theme. Not only that, but I have used at least 8 different free themes in the years I’ve been on WordPress — since I have 4 separate blogs — and I’ve never had one free theme that did not let me change the color of my header text — until this week. So if that option must now be paid for in an upgrade, WordPress has just now begun to do that.

Also my other themes are demonstrating the same problems. WordPress’ “Help” page in the “Appearance” section says clearly that in the “Color” section of the customizer, we can change the color of our header text. But there is no option offed in the “Color” section or any other section of the Customizer. If they say it is offered, but it’s suddenly not there, then there is a technological problem somewhere, or someone just forgot to put the option button into the system.

Thanks for sharing the information above, but it’s not helpful for me. What I need to know is why, all of a sudden, none of my themes allow color change for the header text when they have done so for over 4 years — and why the “Help”page says I can change the header text color, but there is no button to click to do so.

I’ll save these links though, in case I do decide to upgrade in the future, but frankly, if WP isn’t going to give me free themes that let me change the color of my header text, I’ll probably just blog elsewhere. It’s ridiculous to think that I will need to change the background color back to white at some point, and won’t be able to see the title of my blog because the white text color won’t change.

Thanks again for trying to help.

Perhaps the theme customizer has been “improved” since then.

You commented that you were surprised that I had posted about the problem on my blog. I can’t imagine why you would be surprised. Almost all of us post when we have a problem, in order to ask our fellow bloggers who know us and have become friends if they have any ideas that might solve the problem. I have received more help from the bloggers I interact with all the time than I have from any support forum.

Several of my blog readers have written complaining about all the changes to the editing windows and how difficult those changes make things for them. So we have tried to help each other find ways to work around most of them in order to continue as happy bloggers.

It’s interesting that you contact other bloggers for wordpress.com technical support via publishing posts. I would never do that because ignorance and misinformation abounds and I am often faced with correcting misinformation and/or providing relevant details that are often overlooked. That said, so I’m happy to hear that your approach works for you.

As for me, I have answered questions here or over 9 years. I predate all support Staff members being on Staff except one member. I also predate the support documentation.

Please hang in there as Themes Staff will be able to give us a straight answer re: what going on with this in the theme customizer.

Thanks again for taking so much time to supply suggestions.

I think the thing that aggravates so many of us who are out here blogging is that we can’t understand why the administrators keep changing things that are working great. When I could simply go to my dashboard, click on “Appearance” then click on “Header,” I very easily changed my header picture and the color of my text with no problems whatsoever. That was before I had to use “The Customizer.” Now we have this fancy new system, and one of the most important things that we need for our blog title doesn’t work at all. If they had left it alone, we would still be fine. It’s all this continuous changing to something that is not better — and often more trouble — that is wearing on a lot of us. Of course, maybe there are thousands of bloggers out there who like all of it, but I never hear from any of them.

    Anyway, thanks again.

I’m going to carefully avoid ranting about continual, unannounced, and frequently unwelcome changes that we WordPress.COM guinea pigs have been subjected to over the course of the last two years. I know the aim as it is stated here https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2014/12/16/dashboard-update/. However, I do not use a mobile or tablet for blogging. I do own a toothbrush ; but I can take more of these “improvements” that provide me with less and less control over how my content is presented. I will be history as of Thanksgiving when I will remove domain mapping from my sites and make them private.

Hey, I actually read it in my own mind with the word “no” in there. Bless your heart, you’ve been at this a long time. You’d think they would take some of your advice about so many “unwelcome” changes. Sorry it’s been a problem for you as well.

Frankly, I think I’ve been at this too long and have gone sour. Though I did purchase a new domain and was going to move to self hosting a WordPress.ORG install after the last editor changes, since then I have decided against continuing with wordpress at all. However, do note that I bear no ill will towards anyone and wish all those who continue using wordpress software well.

I understand completely, and I hope your new private sites work out great for you. I know for sure if they can’t get this header text situation fixed, I will move somewhere else. And actually, my biggest concern right now is the blogging class I teach for a local junior college. It’s mainly adults who are older and want to learn how to interact with other people online, but they don’t know much about the technology involved at all. They can’t handle things changing around all the time, and they need something that has a simple process they can count on for a while. I’ll have to make a definite decision by August where that’s concerned, and once this term’s class starts, we’ll be stuck with whatever I’ve chosen. I’m sure we’ll live through it, but I want it to be an easy, happy experience for them. I’ve always gotten so much out of blogging, and I know it could change some of their lives a lot for the better.

    Hi Sandra,

In order to use the color panel of the customizer you will need to have the Custom Design upgrade on your site which is part of the WordPress.com Premium and Business Plans.

You will be allowed to see a preview of what the changes will look like when inside the customizer however, the changes will not be active on your site.

To revert back to the free options you may need to exit the preview mode. Here is a screenshot:
    https://cloudup.com/cA7wk3l5YqS

The colors panel does allow you to change the heading and link text as options. If you want to change just the header text you’ll want to upgrade to a paid plan and use custom CSS.

I have been using free themes on here for 4 years, and everyone of them — including the Able theme which I’ve used this whole past year — has allowed me to change the color of my header text without buying an upgrade or doing anything else to customize the sites. So why now — all of a sudden — AND WITH NO WARNING WHATSOEVER — has WordPress cut off that option and is now forcing us to pay extra for it??? That really stinks!

Last month, all the color changers for header text still worked on all my themes. So on my sandraconner.wordpress site, I changed my text to white to work with a darker background I was using temporarily. Now you’re telling me that — with no consideration for me whatsoever — the company has now put me in the ridiculous position of not even being able to read the title on my blog when I change my background back to white. (And just so you will know, on the color panel, the option to change the color of the link text did NOT allow the color of the header text to change. I tried it three different times with no change.)

That is honestly the most asinine — and the most inconsiderate — kind of action I can imagine from people who are supposed to be a reputable blogging host and who claim that they “really care” about the people who use their product.

    I am speechless!

I also realized, after I wrote the other reply, that you meant the background color will not change either. That’s even worse, because I put that odd color of green on my site two weeks ago just so it would balance the new picture in my header. Now, you tell me that I can’t get rid of that green color when I change pictures unless I pay WordPress money. When I opted to use WordPress, the free themes told us what would be available as options, and that’s why I chose as I did. Does WordPress actually believe they are treating us right when they change what the themes offer as options — after we’ve already adopted those themes? — And worse yet — without giving us any clear warning that those options were going to be taken away?

I’ve used at least 8 different themes on here over the years (because I have 4 blogs — all under separate e-mails), and never once had any problems changing header color. Now I can’t even find a free them with that option. What kind of way is that to treat people who have been blogging here for years and who teach blogging classes and have been encouraging students to use WordPress exclusively?

Well, one thing is for sure: I won’t be putting my students on WordPress anymore. Although, obviously, WordPress won’t care one iota. But at least my students won’t have to put up with all the stupidity.

I realize these changes are not your fault personally. Unfortunately, you are on the team that gets the complaints. But I hope you send my replies straight to the top of the administration ladder. I’d like to hear from the top guy about why he thinks suddenly taking options away from faithful bloggers is fair.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my problem.

To clarify, many customization options are still available for free. Including changing the background color with Able.

To see the free options you must exit out of the preview mode of the Custom Design upgrade.

To do this click on one of the customizer options with the blue dot next to it (Fonts, CSS, Colors and Background) then click the “Exit The Preview” link. Here is a screenshot showing which link to click:

Okay, I tried that, and it worked. Thanks for the more detailed explanation. I can’t imagine why WordPress would assume that the average blogger would automatically know to “exit the previewer” in order to get the system to work. I would think anyone would expect the “previewer” to give them a preview and then clicking “done” would give them the finished results. But I guess that’s too simple.

But I’m not going to feel bad about not understanding this stuff because I’ve heard from three different WP tech people about this now, and each one has told me something different and something that conflicts with what another tech told me. So obviously, all the WP support group aren’t on the same page either. I don’t imagine it’s their fault. All of these changes are being thrown at us and from what one support person told me, she was just as caught off guard by many of them as we have been.

Not only that, but I just read the description of a different free theme last night. It said specifically that part of the package options — with no upgrade — was the ability to change the header text color. But the customizer will not do it. And every technician is telling me that I’ll now have to pay for that. Still, the blog description — trying to encourage bloggers to use it — says the opposite. It’s no wonder we’re so confused.

But you’re still telling me that I cannot change my header text back to any other color, right? So if I want my background white, I won’t be able to see the title of my blog now? If they had just told us ahead of time that all of this was changing, I could at least have set my header text to black. It’s very discouraging.

But thanks again for the details about the background situation.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help with this problem. Unfortunately, I’m still stuck with header text colors on all four blogs that will keep causing me problems unless I just change themes completely and get whatever comes with a new theme as far as color is concerned. It’s a bummer, but I’m going to try to stick it out and do some experimenting to see what all I can do to make my sites look as good as possible. I know I can always delete the header and print my title onto my header photos, but I just didn’t want to have to do that all the time.

I thought about reverting back to my blogs on Blogger instead of struggling with this situation any longer, but I’ve become such good friends with many, many people who blog here that I’d late to lose those connections, so I’ll try to hang in there at least a while longer.

Anyway, all of you support people have been great to take your time to look into the situation and give me the advice you could.

    Thanks again.
    Sandra
