Can I change my blogs name? What happens to my history, followers etc… The domain in my blog if i want to upgrade it already exists.
The blog I need help with is thecutekitchen.wordpress.com.
As long as you are completely moving the blog to a new name everything should be fine.
Are you actually referring to a blog name change ie. a site title change?
Or are you referring to changing the blog’s address ie. the URL starting with http:// ?
Note that the site title (blog name) and blog address URL do not have to be the same. The Site title (blog name) and/or the optional Tagline can be changed on the top of this page at any time. > Settings > General
That is exactly where search engine spiders look for the site title and removing it from there can cause issues with getting your content indexed.
You cannot edit any URL. If you want to change the blog address ie. the URL starting with http:// then you must be logged in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog to do that and the URL you desire must be available. If so then you can change the URL by using this guide http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/
The domain in my blog if i want to upgrade it already exists.
Or do you want to buy your own domain name?
if the answer is yes then this http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2012/04/02/do-i-need-a-domain/ and what follows applies.
You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades.
You must have a free hosted WordPress.com blog to domain map from.
In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and the domain name your desire must be available for purchase.
If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.
See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
See here for mapping a sub-domain (for a domain with an existing website) to your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/
Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.
If I change my name… how are people going to find me….if they had the previous address. Im afraid to loose followers and start all over…
Read this please so you are clear on what it is that domain mapping does and why we purchase it http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2012/04/02/do-i-need-a-domain/ When you use domain mapping every time someone clicks on the old .wordpress.com URLs they are seamlessly directed to the same content under the new domain URLs. That’s what it’s for and that’s what domain mapping does.
