Need some help with page archives on Twenty Eleven theme
I just switched to Twenty Eleven, and I have my posts organized by category pages. When I click on them though, (like food and recipes) the posts on the page show up completely. I want them to appear as a summary – either as only titles or however it’s possible. But I would like for the post not to show up in full. (I don’t want to moderate the amount though, by choosing “show only 10 or 5”)
Is it possible to show the posts as a summary on the pages?
I hope i explained myself properly, I’m new here and you can probably tell I’m not too informed! Thank you in advance to anybody who helps
The blog I need help with is paperportraiture.wordpress.com.
You can use the more tag:
which will truncate your posts at a point you designate.
I have my posts organized by category pages. … Is it possible to show the posts as a summary on the pages?
I’m sorry but whether or not full posts are displayed on Categories Pages and Archives pages is theme dependent ie. it’s coded into the template and we cannot edit templates or themes. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/
In the majority of themes, posts on category or other archive pages show up just as they do on the main posts page in the blog and the nubler displayed is also the same. (See this page > Settings > Reading and note how many posts you choose there sets it for all). But in some themes only the beginnings of posts are shown, and in a few themes you only get titles or thumbnails. See here for a theme list of themes that may display the way you want > Category/archive pages: full posts or not http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/25/full-posts-in-archive-pages/
If you are up for changing themes again, then you could check out this list of themes which have the custom excerpt feature active.
It means you can make a teaser with a photo to entice your readers to take a further look at your post. Don’t want to confuse you with too many options but I really like this feature. The custom excerpt goes out on your feeds too, and to email subscribers.
~~at least we are both giving good advice
And not to confuse the original poster, there is also this work around:
haha hello again, thank you very much, I’m not confused yet and hope not to be. Is there a way to send good karma your way? haha thanks again, I’m going to read through the links posted here (the excerpt thing you mentioned really caught my eye 1Tess, thanks for that) I could try changing themes again, althouh I do like twenty eleven! it looks really nice (or I think haha) Couldn’t thank you guys enough!!!
Ask a question anytime!
It’s good if you can use the answers we can give…
Thanks 1tess, i appreciate it. Im using the “more tag” to cut off my posts and it seems to work great! I’m going to look into the custom excerpt function now and see what I can do with that.
Now I just have to sort out why my featured post isn’t showing its image on the homepage! Agh! At least I’ve learned quite a bit about how everything works on here, it’s been really helpful. Thank you thank you!!
Actually, it’s just an image for one of the posts. My trip to Venice, the image isn’t coming up now. I don’t know if it has to do with the more tag or not, but it’s not nested between any HTML. Could another post cause the problem? This seems to be the only one that’s messed up. Well, this one and of one my recent posts below the showcase that now is not showing ITS picture either. Well if you guys know anything I appreciate it, if not it’s fine, I thank you again for your help and your links!
The image is appearing on the post when displayed on its own page http://paperportraiture.wordpress.com/2012/08/18/its-almost-fall-destination-venice/
