Need some quick help with Twenty Eleven
I tried changing themes this morning and created a mess that I don’t have time to deal with. So I’ve switched back to Twenty Eleven but lost some customization.
I’m almost back in business but my widgets are misbehaving: I can’t place them. And most problematic at the moment, Archives and Meta appear in the sidebar despite my use of all three footer widgets, including for Archives. I’d just like to get rid of Archives and Meta in the sidebar right now and deal with restoring other widgets later. Thanks for your expert help!
The blog I need help with is teresayoung.com.
I’m still having this problem and would greatly appreciate some help from community members or wordpress happiness engineers.
Archives and Meta headings are still appearing in the sidebar despite my use of all three footer widgets. I haven’t had this problem before. What do I do? And I’m a wordpress.com member, of course.
Move a widget, any widget, into the right sidebar. Then take it out. That will clear out the pre-existing widget set from the sidebar.
Ah. I have three in there now so I’ll try that with them, or move a new one in and out, or both. Thank you!
After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install the widgets that migrated there when you changed themes exactly where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.
Hope this helps!
I’ve tried but those archives & meta links on the sidebar stubbornly remain, like ghosts, since they clearly shouldn’t be there. I’ll try again when I have a break later. Thank you!
Please tell us exactly which browser (and version of it) are you using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/ and also post any error reports you get.

Doesn’t work that way! Archives and Meta are the default items that the theme displays when you haven’t added any widgets yourself. You don’t get rid of them then add your own, you get rid of them by adding your own.
I already did. You should see them displayed at the bottom of my blog, too…

You added footer widgets. Sorry I wasn’t clearer before: you get rid of the default sidebar items by adding your own sidebar widgets.
If you want no sidebar at all, you go to Appearance > Theme Options and select the no-sidebar layout.
Got it and will try that tonight when I have time as I lost my widgets when I changed back to Twenty Eleven. (I won’t go with no sidebars as that theme shrinks horizontally when you do that.)
A note on “restoring” your widgets: if you add image widgets again, don’t use this:
The theme automatically downsizes the image to make it fit the sidebar, but bad browser versions don’t understand this: they may display the image distorted or in real size. You should first downsize a copy of it in an image editing application (or an online tool) to the right pixel width, then upload and use that copy. This will give you better quality as well. Right width in 2011 is 187px.
