New Media "Upgrade" has Major Flaws: WordPress Support Please

There have been a number of similar complaints, all unanswered, so I will list the problems I’m having here:

    1. Image titles and alt text do not convey with image when inserted into post or page. This is a BIG problem for me, because my site is almost entirely image-based. I have titled all the images I post in advance, with considerable time expended in doing so, and those hours are now wasted because the titles no longer carry in the insert with the new media upload. This means I have to reenter each title, even though they show up in the box prior to inserting them. This is incredibly frustrating, and a major failure of the system. Not what I would consider an “Upgrade.”

    2. After inserting images and selecting advanced feature “Open in New Window,” the image opens at the size of the preview, whether it’s thumbnail, or medium size. Images prior to this so-called upgrade display at full size. My images are mostly 600w x 900h @ 100dpi, but they are displaying, when selected, at the size of the preview or thumbnail. Again, this is a Major Failure. I’m very displeased with both of these failures, as they both impair the features of images (viewing size) and impede the process of uploading images (titling and alt text).

I would really appreciate a response from WordPress support, and would like to know when they plan to fix these failures. It’s imperative that they do, as there have already been many complaints.

The blog I need help with is asmsgbooks.wordpress.com.

Having both title and alt on an image is redundant and can hurt SEO, so title was retired. The current cascade is to ignore title and to use alt. If alt is empty then caption is used. If both alt and caption are empty then title is used as the fallback. See this ticket for details:

    http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/18984

We’ve reopened that ticket for further discussion given the points you bring up here. Thanks for the feedback.

@ryan, the problem here isn’t so much the argument of whether users should use alt or title or one or neither or both — it’s that ever since the upgrade today, once a user hits “Insert into Post”, all the text which the user just inputted into the “Alt Text” OR “Title” fields simply disappears, and the user is left with HTML code for their img which shows alt=""

    hi!
I’m afraid I´m having the same problems with the titles, but still haven´t hd any answer from the spanish wp forum..
What can i do to fix it? I’ve tried to substitute titles by alt. texts, in a few posts, and it isn´t working. Titles appear in the editing pic fields, but not when i’m visiting the blog.
Is it going to by fixed by WP soon?
am i supposed to have to edit everyone of my posts to fix it (if i knew how to do it)?

the blog i’m needing help with is:
    thesongswelove.wordpress.com.

    thanks for any help!

Hi there, I wanted to clarify the “title” issue.

There are two types of titles:

    1) The first type of title can be added when you use the Add Media button. This title consists of wording that displays above the image on the image’s attachment page or on its page in the carousel, if you’re using one.

    2) The second type of title is the old “tooltip”-style title, which can currently only be edited after your image has already been inserted into a post. Once inserted, click on the image to display the Edit Image icon. Click the icon to load up the Edit Image window, and add the tooltip title there. That tooltip title displays text in a little yellow label if you put your mouse over the image.

Thanks, kathryn. i’m referring to the second kind of title, the one that uses to appear in a yelllow label when placing the mouse over the label.
If i edit the pic now, i can see the title, written in the “title” field. But it´s not appeairng when browsing!!
the curious fact is that i’m not having this problem with pics inserted IN the post, but only with main pics that i choose to be uses as thumbnails.
Is it oging to be fixed by itself? am i suppossed to do anything with every one of my post to see the yellow label title again?

srhelvetica – could you please provide an example or two of where you’ve added a tooltip title but it’s not appearing so I can take a look? If you paste the links here and explain which images are affected, I can investigate. Thanks.

    ok:
    This post, for instance:
    http://thesongswelove.wordpress.com/2012/11/01/hacker-death-grips/

There are two pics in this post. the main one: (the bearded guy with the mic) and the second one (the same guy at the balcony being a little..er…rude).
BOTH pics have titles defined, but if you move your mouse over both pics, you’ll only see the title over the small on (guy at balcony). You should see the text: “I’m in your aaareaaaa!” over the firstpic, but it´s not working. However, if i edit this pic, i see the “I’m in your aaareaaaa!” text filling the “title” field.

Thanks for the example, I understand what you mean.

The featured image (at the top) does not support the tooltip title tag. The title that you defined here:

    http://cl.ly/image/1f3r2K170Y0a

…is not the tooltip title, it’s the title of the first type I described above, and would be displayed only if the image were displayed on an attachment page or part of a carousel.

thank u for your fast response, kathryn. the fact is that this “title” was perfectly working ’til yesterday, and withte new system,it´s not.

What do i have to do if i want to see the “”I’m in your aaareaaaa!” text appearing over thumbnail and the main pic, as always did?
i’de thank any explanation, even if i have to edit post by post to fix it!

The empty alt attribute is now fixed.

The reasoning behind dropping the title attribute is outlined here:

    http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/18984

Basically, we’re trying to improve accessibility and play nicely with screen readers.

There is one more fix coming that will improve the alt-caption-title fallback when sending to the editor so that those who invested in title and left caption and alt blank will have their titles show in the alt attribute.

“it’s the title of the first type I described above, and would be displayed only if the image were displayed on an attachment page or part of a carousel.”

That title is not displayed on the gallery carousel since the upgrade. Maybe this is in relation with the strange experiences above?

Ok i did a question on this and haven’t heard back so I am here. I got a wee bit happier when the attachment page box appeared and the title and the copyright information that i placed there did hold for about half an hour at one point today. There were also 2 media words, as buttons to choose from, one worked, and one was the old not working one. However, since I got back home, it is not working, in fact it attempted to import data from purple shoe photography attachment page details, into a new blog post with media in elisa’s spot. I just deleted the post and sighed. Perhaps that was because someone was working on it. I wouldn’t mind if it didn’t work if clicking on the image itself in my photography blog, only took it back to the individual blog post only, because I have the copy write information there. This is really a bummer, and what I use WordPress for… :(

And yes, image sizes are all messed up, before it let you choose a size, granted that size differed between themes, at least the ones I am using. Captions, which I do NOT wish to use, are still not functioning either.

Ps. What is alt? Where would it show? I tried putting the stuff in there that I was placing in Description box before, but nothing held.

    What is alt?

The Title is not important. The ALT attribute is very important. Alternate text (ALT) attribute is for situations when an image cannot be loaded and also assists visually impaired people who use apps to read ALT attribute, so what’s in a picture is known. … Read more here > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2012/01/08/get-the-most-out-of-image-search/

Thanks, I learned how to do alt tags and what they are! Amidst distress comes some learning :)
