New User Registration notices by the hundreds

  1. I have started getting New User Registration notices by the hundreds and they are jamming up my email. I'm not sure what is happening. Have I been hacked? I think I should shut it down and start over?

The blog I need help with is richardallenpro.wordpress.com.

  2. I'm having this exact same problem and I don't even know where they are signing up as there is no signup form on my site! My email is full of these New User Registrations :( Looking forward to an answer to this...

  3. I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up. 4. Hi @rich2852014 and @pjemcreative,

User registration isn't supported on WordPress.com, which suggests you have a self hosted WordPress.org site. The differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org are explained here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

We are only able to assist with WordPress.com sites on these forums, but I can point you in the right direction.

In your WP Admin dashboard for the affected site, go to Settings > General. Uncheck "Anyone can register" next to Membership.

Doing so will disable the registration form. You can then review the users who signed up to remove them.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  5. In addition to my last reply, it's likely the form is completed by bots which is why there are such a high number (hundreds) of user registration emails.

  6. Hi @gemmacevans, Thank you! Unchecking "Anyone can register" worked :) Although I still don't know where (even bots) were signing up to in the first place as the site is not live and there is no sign up form for them to sign up to...

I am also getting inundated with "New Email Subscriber" emails from WordPress, for another site I manage and cannot work out where these are coming from either! Do you have any clues as to how to stop these ones?

Your help is much appreciated, thank you!

  7. Hi @pjemcreative,

You're welcome! I'm pleased to hear that worked :)

As your site isn't hosted on WordPress.com servers, it's not something I am able to look in to for you. However, support for self hosted WordPress.org sites can be found on these forums:

    https://wordpress.org/support/

If you don't already see an answer to your question, you can post a new one.

Best of luck getting it sorted out!

  8. Hi @gemmacevans,

I should have mentioned, the "New Email Subscriber" emails are coming from another site I own which is a .com site not a .org.

Do you know where these emails are coming from and how to stop them?

    Many thanks!
    Jess

  9. Hi Jess,

What is the URL of your WordPress.com site? I'll take a look!

  10. Hi Gemma,

I have taken my Word Press site and Word Press account down based on information from a friend who said that WordPress had a serious virus. It took several days for the notifications to stop but they have finally stopped. Here is what one of the notifications looked like. Thank you for looking into this. I hope to come back to WordPress once these issues can be resolved. Its been difficult to get good information and help with this. My site was wordpress.

    Richard

  11. Hi Richard,

I have taken my Word Press site and Word Press account down based on information from a friend who said that WordPress had a serious virus.

The recent exploit your friend mentioned did not impact sites on WordPress.com, only some self hosted WordPress.org sites. Fixes have since been released and users are being advised to update to the latest version. You did not need to delete your WordPress.com site for this reason.

Here is what one of the notifications looked like.

I could not see any notifications in your reply to me.

I hope to come back to WordPress once these issues can be resolved.

You can create a new site any time using this link:

  12. Hi Gemma,

    My website is http://www.drummingmad.com

All the signup forms on the site go through to MailChimp so I don't know where these "New Email Subscriber" from WordPress emails are coming from. Is there perhaps a WordPress blog somewhere that has been automatically set up when I installed WordPress that is accepting these signups? Please help as it's getting ridiculous! I'm getting over 50 emails a day from this and really need them to stop!

    Many thanks and kind regards,
    Jess

  13. Hi Jess,

Thanks for sending me the link. drummingmad.com is a self hosted WordPress.org site, which uses Jetpack to connect it to your WordPress.com account.

All the signup forms on the site go through to MailChimp so I don't know where these "New Email Subscriber" from WordPress emails are coming from.

Your site is self hosted and currently in maintenance mode so I'm not able to give you a great deal of advice. But it would be a good idea to check there are no settings for MailChimp or plugins you have used for email subscription functionality.

  15. Ok now I'm concerned how you got through to our drummingmad.org site instead of drummingmad.com?? Drummingmad.org is in maintenance mode as it is our development site. DrummingMad.COM is definitely NOT in maintenance mode and is not a .ORG site... Not sure how you got through to the .org site from the link as I've clicked it on different computers and different browsers and it correctly goes through to the .COM site which is definitely not in maintenance mode...
Anyway I've just blocked the WordPress emails and that seems to have done the trick. Still no idea where they are coming from but at least my email is not getting bombarded now! :)

  16. Hi Jess,

Ok now I'm concerned how you got through to our drummingmad.org site instead of drummingmad.com??

drummingmad.org is listed as one of the sites in your account.

DrummingMad.COM is definitely NOT in maintenance mode and is not a .ORG site...

I've double checked for you and drummingmad.com is a self hosted WordPress.org site too.

Glad to hear you won't be getting bombarded by emails now :)
