No WP referrers after changing domain
Recently I changed my domain (by purchasing it through wordpress). Now my stats no longer seem to record wordpress as a referrer. The views are still what I would expect, and facebook and search results are still counted as referrers — WP.com and the topic pages are the only things left out.
Is this something I can fix? Did I maybe miss a step in changing my blog’s domain? I know people are clicking my stories on the wordpress site because of the spike I get just after posting – I just wish the referrers would show up.
The blog I need help with is pinionpost.com.
There’s nothing thatv requires “fixing”. The primary reason we purchase a domain is so the fact our blogs are being free hosted by WordPress.com is obscured. The seconary reason we purchase domain mapping is so that all the URLs from the .wordpress.com root blog no matter where they are located on the internet when clicked will seamlessly redirect to the same content in the posts under the new domain URLs. That’s exactly what is happening on your blog now – all is well.
The pagerank and authority the blog earned was earned by the .wordpress.com URLs and belongs to them. It’s not transferable. so what that means is the domain starts from zero. In about 4 – 6 months time the same content will all be re-indexed by search engines under the domain URLs, and all things being equal the blog will probably have the same pagerank and authority it had prior to purchasing domain mapping.
