Not working – Creating Tags, Creating Links, Quick Edit

If that does not work for you then these are the troubleshooting steps we take whenever any issues like this arise:

using the browser with all extensions or add-ons disabled
updating the browser to the latest stable version (not a buggy BETA browser version) http://browsehappy.com/
confirming third party cookies is enabled http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=61416
confirming Flash is updated http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ and if required installing the latest version of Flash http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
resetting your router and modem and rebooting your computer
then logging in using the secure https:// log-in see http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
trying another browser
If those do not work for you then we need to know:
(1) how you are connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com. The way you connect to the internet (mobile, satellite, DSL, dial-up) and to your blog, and how many proxy server jumps etc. it takes to connect can cause problems. There maybe be problems with your ISP and/or with the proxy servers.
(2) exactly which browser and version of it are you using. If you don’t know click here to find out > http://whatsmyuseragent.com/
timethief: I appreciate your reply, but your suggestions put all of the blame on my end, so I’ll repeat myself: “Like last time, I’ve taken steps to rule out the cause of the problem being at my end. Those features were working ok at my blogs late yesterday. Nothing happened at my end between now and today that could have caused it.” Yes, I’ve already done all that you suggested. All you listed is same today that it was yesterday when all was well. I’m not as new here as I might appear to be. Again, please keep in mind, last time this exact same problem happened, it resolved itself or someone at WordPress found out about it and fixed it about 6 hours after I discovered the problem, so last time this happened I didn’t need to fix or do anything at my end to resolve it. The ability to create Tags, Links in postings, and use Quick Edit all suddenly started working again. I never found out what the cause of the problem was last time. It really bugs me when a service like WordPress puts all of the blame on the customer and can’t admit it when it is having a problem at its end as if it is a flawless service that never has any problems. And to be blunt about it, I really hate it when people tell me to clear the cache, as if that is the one magical solution that fixes everything. If I were working at WordPress, and if this were like an electronics problem on a circuit board, then I’d trace the failed Tags, Links, and Quick Edit to a common point where the cause is likely to be, considering all other features are working correctly. I don’t have time to jump through anymore hoops today. If WordPress does not fix the problem by end of today, then I’ll shut down all of my WordPress blogs and go somewhere else like maybe Blogger.
I don’t work for WordPress.com. I’m a Volunteer trying to provide the best support I can. I’m sorry you did not appreciate me asking your for specifics. I have flagged this thread for Staff attention. Please be patient while waiting for a response from them.
timethief: Your help is appreciated, and I’m sure you are a good volunteer. Even so, in the future you should take the time to carefully read and understand what the customer has stated that has already been done, rather then to copy and paste a standard answer into your reply to tell the customer to do what has already been done. Maybe I should have provided details for what I specifically did to rule out the problem being at my end. Further, such a standard answer as what you provided, and I know you meant well, can cause people who don’t know better from experience to waste hours looking for a problem that is obviously not at the customer end and not the fault of the customer, especially for this kind of problem. This particular problem with creating Tags, Links in postings, and to access Quick Edit has happened before, having suddenly stopped working for 6 hours and then suddenly started working again. It has been fixed before, and not by me doing anything at my end. WordPress needs to focus on finding the real cause of this problem that has happened a second time now this month, and fix it so that it does not happen again. I just checked those features again. At http://timelinejournal.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php# I click on Quick Edit and nothing happens. The other options like Edit and View work just fine. Back in editing the posting http://timelinejournal.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=2060&action=edit the button used to create a link in the posting does not work. [The links already in that posting were copied and pasted from an earlier posting.] Also, I can enter a Tag in the box for creating Tags and then when I click on Add nothing happens. This is identical to what happened earlier this month, and there was never an explanation for what caused it. Those 3 features just suddenly started working again 6 hours later that time. And this time I’ll again keep checking near the top of every hour for the rest of today to see if those 3 features are working again. But this time it would be good to know what caused it, so if it happens again I’ll know and can include that information in any future report in this forum. So I will appreciate Staff looking at this, especially since I know WordPress is short of paid help in Support right now and is trying to do the best they can under the circumstances. I know Support is focused on Premium customers right now, and I’d like to go Premium but I simply can’t afford to do that at this time. If WordPress isn’t going to work right, and there isn’t an easy way to report a problem to get it fixed, then I have to go back to Blogger, which would be like going back to the Stone Age, but that’s ok if it works well enough. I have cancer. My time is running out. There are things I want to get said – written – while I still can, and I do prefer WordPress as the best means to do that.
Staff: You can see at http://timelinejournal.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php# that I’ve done a posting every day and had no trouble using Tags. But today a tag can’t be created. Why not? What changed overnight? And again I must note, it is not just this blog, but all of my blogs. Also, I can’t create new Links in postings today, and nothing happens when clicking on Quick Edit – where I sometimes go to uncheck the box to prevent Comments on certain postings. Is someone at WordPress doing some kind of maintenance that has taken those 3 features down for some blogs? This same problem happened earlier this month for 6 hours and then suddenly got fixed. What do those 3 features have in common that would cause only those 3 features to fail or be deactivated? I worked 10 years in electronics troubleshooting problems and tracing specific failed parts to a specific common cause, so that’s why I’m looking at this problem in that way. Even though I checked this end anyway just to rule it out, there really is no physical way a problem at my end could cause just those 3 specific features – creating Tags, creating Links in postings, and using Quick Edit – to fail at WordPress. And nothing angers me more than for someone to tell me to clear the cache, and how to clear the cache. It is the typical magical fantasy world solution offered by people who have no clue what the real cause could be. When people are sent to look for where the cause of a problem can’t be, then time is wasted that could be spent by those who should be looking for where the cause of the problem can be.
NOW, as of 4:15pm CT, I am again able to create Tags for the postings. Quick Edit also works again. However, the button used to create a Link in a posting is still not working. I didn’t do anything on my end any different. Why after about 7 hours did those 2 of 3 failed features suddenly start working again? So 2 of the 3 have been fixed. Who fixed them? What caused them to fail? Why are those 2 fixed, but not the button to create a new link in a posting? Why is it still down? At least some progress is being made now. I’ll check it again later. Meantime, I can post whole link addresses instead of highlighting a word and using the Link button to make the word a link.
NOW 4:30pm CT – I just discovered that the button used to create new Links in postings, and I mean highlight a word and make it a link, in Visual does not work, but the button in HTML that has “link” underlined on it does work! That might be a clue as to where the problem is for this remaining problem. So until that problem is solved, I can at least go to HTML to use the Link button there while the Link button in Visual isn’t working.
NOW 4:40pm CT – I’ve not done anything different and nothing has happened on this end in the past 10 minutes. OOPS! Creating Tags has failed again. I’m unable to add more Tags to the posting. Also, clicking on Quick Edit does not work again. So those two problems are back now after working for about 25 minutes. Even so, maybe the fact that creating a new link, making a word a link I mean, only works with the button in HTML, but not the button in Visual, is a clue as to what is wrong with all 3 problems. This sure is frustrating, but interesting. I’m done with it today. I’ll check it tomorrow morning. If the three problems are still there tomorrow, then I’ll have to shut down my WordPress blogs and go back to Blogger. Maybe it’s sunspots causing today’s unusual problems. Maybe it’s just not a good day for WordPress.

Have you tried clearing your browser’s cache when it happens?
If that didn’t help, would you please tell us which browser (and version of) you’re using?
macmanx: Did you read ANY of what I wrote above in my original report and then my reply to timethief? Or are you writing that suggestion as some kind of sick joke? If you are unable to respond to the issue yourself, then who wrote your reply, and why are you here? I have 12 years of experience on the Internet. Clearing the cache is NOT the one magical solution to all problems on the Internet, except in the fantasy world some people live in, and so it is what they suggest when they have no clue what the real cause of a problem could be. Further, it doesn’t matter what my browser is. Fact is, it is the same browser when there wasn’t a problem with WordPress. Nothing changed on my end when the problem began with WordPress, so nothing on my end could have caused the problem. What happened at WordPress between the few hours between one posting when everything worked well, and the next posting when I could no longer create Tags and Links, and when I could no longer access Quick Edit? Anyway, the problem hasn’t been resolved this time like it was earlier this month when the problem only lasted for 6 hours one day. I’ve decided this morning to shut down all of my WordPress blogs and return to Blogger – not as fancy as WordPress for design, but at least I never had any problems with Blogger. So after this posting here, I’ll no longer be following this forum thread. It was a waste of time to come here. I condemn WordPress for not having any real Support.
