Overrun with "fake followers"
Not long after the number of spam comments getting into moderation increased exponentially, I began seeing an increase in what I call “fake followers”.
The problem is only getting worse. I stopped email for likes, and now I’m tempted to stop email notification of new followers. The problem, of course, is that sifting through 25 “followers” a day to find the one that’s legit is both time-consuming and a pain.
This sharp rise in “followers” who have no blog, who use only a gravatar profile with no URL attached, who write in a language I can’t even identify or are selling everything from apartments in Jakarta to “Yo, babe! Toys for your intimacies!” is driving me crazy.
There has to be a reason for it, and if there’s a reason, there should be a solution. People are beginning to blog about the problem, it’s so bad.
We need to have the ability to block followers.
The blog I need help with is shoreacres.wordpress.com.
I don’t think creating yet another thread is helpful https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/preventing-spammers-from-being-notified-of-new-posts/page/2?replies=51
You can click the the report button on the bottom right hand corner of the gravatar profile pages to report these followers to Gravatar Staff.
Oh, sorry – missed that thread when I looked. I’ll go look at it now. And I didn’t realize the gravatar pages could be reported. Thanks!
You’re welcome. Yes, every gravatar profile page has a little “report Abuse” button on the right hand side bottom corner. There’s a dropdown menu you can use after you click it.
I marked this “resolved” and am adding a small comment to the other thread.
Okay and see you there.
