    Hello:

This is regarding a gallery I have set up on my recipe page:

    http://gathering-flavors.com/recipes/ .

I would like to be able to link each photo to the original post in which it is published, rather than to a media file, so that folks can access my recipes. Is there a way to do this?

I have the custom upgrade on this site and would love to be able to do this so folks can get straight to my recipes when clicking the photos.

    Thanks!

    Dena

The blog I need help with is gathering-flavors.com.

Is there a way to do this?

At the moment that is not possible. The images in a Gallery will only open in the Photo Carousel, the image Attachment page or the Media file. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/

I’ve posted 2 workarounds on my Gallery demo site, but that is just what they are, workarounds. You can find them here:

    Using Gallery image captions: http://agallerydemo.wordpress.com/2012/07/28/gallery-as-an-index-page/

Using a table instead of a Gallery:
    http://agallerydemo.wordpress.com/parent-page/child-page-1/grandchild-page/

One other thing you might consider doing is changing themes. There are a number of them that use a grid layout on the front/home page of the site which will, of course, lead your visitors to the relevant post. No need for a Gallery at all.

Hope you don’t mind, I’ve added your post to my forum thread here:

Thank you for this response. I will take a look at the work-arounds you suggested to see if any of them work for me…..I am not interested in a grid front page for now, but I appreciate that at some point I may want to change themes. I find grid front pages a bit too cluttered for my tastes….

And it is fine that you added this to your thread. The easier it is to find answers to questions the better….

    Hi:
I just wanted to say I decided to go ahead and use the workaround Jennifer suggested. That is, on my recipe page, I added a link to the original post in the caption area of each photo in a gallery. While it is not ideal, it will do for now, until WordPress.com adds a new feature.

I would love love love it if galleries would include the option to click a photo to go directly to the post in which it was originally published. I hope the WordPress Gods are listening!

Here is a link to my recipe page, in case others would like to see this workaround in action:

Thank you Jennifer. I will close this thread now since it is appears to be as resolved as it can be…..for now.

Hi there, just wanted to chime in and thank Jennifer for all your suggestions here.

Dena – you might want to make the captioned URL a link that says something like “View Recipe” so it looks a little cleaner and the links don’t get cut off visually.

    For example:

    <a href="http://gathering-flavors.com/2014/02/12/penne-pasta-with-shrimp-and-chicken/">View Recipe</a>

Jennifer – you may already know this, but I just wanted mention that the media gallery works is a core WordPress feature, so any new functionality is likely going to come from the WordPress.org side. If you’re involved on that front (or would like to be!) the community is always open hearing suggestions of how it should evolve.

Thanks Kathryn-I’m aware that the Gallery it is a WP core feature, but I opened my thread in the Ideas forum following a suggestion by Sheri (designsimply) in another WPcom forum thread. If that is not the place for it, I apologize.

Not at all, it’s totally fine to have posted it there. :-) Just wanted to keep you in the loop on where larger decisions about the media gallery are generally made.

Needless-to-say, my fervor to collect the various requests in our forums just got a cold shower. :/

This is in response to Kathryn’s suggesting re: View Recipe. What a great idea. I just tried it on one of my photos and it works well. I will update all my recipes in the same way. Thank you so much! D.

@justjennifer, love the fervor! This particular issue is one of those hot topics that is tied in to the core WordPress code very tightly and also has a ton of history and opinions surrounding it. I think that’s why kathrynwp suggested following along on the make/core blog, because it would give you some additional background about some of the project’s more-complex-than-they-seem feature requests like this one. But you don’t have to follow core if you don’t want to!

I admit to loving the ideas forum because it’s a good place to gather data about the number of users who may be interested in certain features. Data like that can be useful to have on hand when discussing updates with developers, especially if there are a lot of posters, so I appreciate the effort to collect those and it doesn’t go unnoticed. I saw that denacooking posted on your ideas thread bringing the total number of comments to 15 on that idea.

Just signed on to follow make.wordpress.org/ core. Thanks for the tip. D

@denacooking, http://make.wordpress.org/core/ is a blog for developers about making the WordPress software, which is a bit different from WordPress.com. If you’d like to learn more about the differences, I would recommend reading http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ as a starting reference point.
