Whenever I try to place a picture in my blog posts, the picture uploads fine and shows correctly as I’m writing what I want to write, however, when I publish or preview my post, the picture is halved and has horrible black lines running through it, ruining the picture. When I try to edit the picture, it looks normal! It just happens when it’s been published or previewed!
Why is this happening and how can I fix this? Also, how do you make your picture appear as a big profile for the post like some of the other blogs I’m following can? They have the picture they want, huge on top of the brief beginning of their blog.

It kind of sounds to me like the images you’re using are saved in an odd way or with an odd color profile. Can you try making sure the images are saved as RGB and not some other color space or profile.
If you’re still having trouble after that, can you link directly to one of the images with the problem so I can take a closer look?

Do you mean a header image? If the theme you are using supports custom header images, you can add one via Appearance > Header in your blog dashboard. For more info, see http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/custom-header-image/
If that’s not what you meant, try linking to an example blog and describing which image you’re referring to so volunteers in the forums can take a look at a specific example.
