Post formatting problems in visual mode

  • The visual editor seems not to be working for me in a recent post:
    http://egypt4.wordpress.com/2007/12/14/back-to-london/

I added in hard returns in visual mode, but they didn’t take. Is there anything I can do short of adding break tags everywhere in code view?

And if anyone knows why this may have changed since I posted last night, please tell me. (I’m on a Mac and did an OS upgrade: could that be the problem?)

  • My post will look a bit different now because I added in open and close paragraph tags everywhere. However, I looked at another post, which looked the same in code, but displayed differently.

So does anyone know what’s going on? Thanks.

  • I don’t seem to see any problem with the two posts you have provided, egypt4. Is the formatting problem happening with only this particular theme?

It could be something to do with your browser but if you’re using Firefox, as I am, it looks perfectly fine.

  • I did fix the post, but I think the code view/editor has changed. That’s what I’ve been using, but now is it strictly code rather than a code/design mishmash?

  • Do you mean that when you try to click on the design part of it, it refuses to open? If that’s the case then you’ve probably left something broken in your code. Probably you might have forgotten to close some of the tags and that’s not allowing you to go into design mode. Try doing a new post and don’t switch between design and code if possible. If the problem persists, try taking a screenshot and putting it here so we can understand what you’re trying to say.

  • Okay, this is what’s happening. I start writing in code view. Then, I click “save and continue editing” and I get dumped back into visual view. Then, when I go back to code view, the formatting has changed and some of my tags have disappeared (like paragraph code).

So the I go back to visual, enter my hard returns and such, but when I publish the post, the formatting is all messed up and there are no hard returns. So it looks like this:

    Dutch (mis)treat

I’m going to go into the code view soon and re-add all the paragraph codes, but this is driving me crazy.

This seems to be a new problem as of today. Did WordPress update the code view? Or is related to my OS upgrade (Mac 10.something, not Leopard).

  • I just went into visual mode and added the first line with the apology… and even though I entered a hard return in visual mode, it’s all running together on my blog.

Am I going to have to keep entering p tags everywhere?

  • I applied that theme which you are having and did what you’ve mentioned above. You will be dumped into the visual view when you hit save and continue editing and the codes in the code view vanish because they have already been incorporated into the design view. And moreover, try not putting paragraph tags in the code view because a simple hard return will give you a new line in code and even in the design view. You essentially don’t need the p and br tags to format the post.

So when you went into design view after Save and Continue Editing, was all the formatting gone?

  • I think you were trying to see what I did. If yes, it’s here :-

  • This problem is usually caused by the browser you are using to write your posts. If you’ve just done an OS upgrade on your Mac, I assume you’re now using Leopard, which contains Safari 3. This browser does not play well with the TinyMCE that underwrites the WordPress editor.

You have a couple of choices; change your browser – I’m a great advocate of Flock, (which works great on a Tiger Mac, but I have not tested it on a Leopard Mac), because of its built-in blog editor or you can use Firefox, Bon Echo or Camino which are all based on the Mozilla engine.

The other choice, which has worked for some people previously, is to turn off the Visual Editor. To do this, go to your Dashboard and then to Users > Your Profile and uncheck the box that says “Use the Visual Rich Editor when writing”

  • Should have explained; because Safari 3 is not supported by TinyMCE (they’re waiting for Apple to decide if it’s finished or not before trying to support it, I think), what happens is that all of the formatting code gets stripped out when you click “Save” or “Publish”.

As far as I am aware, this problem is not theme-dependent (in other words, whichever theme you use, you’ll have the same difficulty).

  • My suggestion is to download either Camino or Firefox which are both very compatible with wordpress.com and all of your formatting problems will go away.

    Firefox: http://en.www.mozilla.com/en/
    Camino: http://caminobrowser.org/

  • Hurray, the problem is fixed! I unchecked the ‘visual editor’ box in my profile, and now all I see is code view, and the formatting is holding. What’s weird is that I don’t think I’ve ever seen the visual editor before… did I accidentally turn it on? Who knows.

I am using Safari, though maybe I’ll switch to Firefox (which I use on my PC at work but not at home on my Mac). My OS is 10.4.11, not Leopard.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for your help.

  • I’ve heard of the visual editor being “activated” seemingly by magic before. In fact, it happened once to me.

  • The 10.4.11 update included an update from Safari 2 to Safari 3; that would have broken it as 2 never displayed the Visual Editor and 3 does.

  • With Safari 3 you will still have the same problem with the visual editor stripping out paragraph breaks. I’ve tried everything, and there is no solution I have found short of turning off the visual text editor or using another browser. I like Safari, but at least at this time, it is a headache with wordpress.

  • egypt4, I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM, I’ve been trying to format the same post for about 2 hours now, because WordPress will not accept my hard enters! Or it will accept them half or a third the time (with no consistency whatsoever), and then if I go back to the post to edit something else, after I save the post, it will have undone the enters and everything will be “soft entered”, or everything will just run together! Not only is all my formatting (that is, spacing between paragraphs) constantly destroyed every time I press the “save” button, there is not even any rhyme or rhythm to when it works and when it doesn’t, and when my changes last and when they don’t, and sometimes changes will work in one spot and not in the other within the same post, within the single pressing of the save button! Does anyone else have this problem? And it’s not the browser, because I don’t use Safari and I’ve tried in both Internet Explore and Firefox, and the problem is exactly the same in both.

  • And it’s not the browser, because I don’t use Safari and I’ve tried in both

I believe wp.com blogs are all set up to use the visual rich text editor unless we choose to shut it off. At least every wp.com blog I’ve had was originally set up that way.

Internet Explore and Firefox, and the problem is exactly the same in both.

    Have you tried?
-> Your Profile -> removing the mark indicating you want to “use the visual rich text editor” and then clicking “update profile”.

You will then be using the standard editor.

  • I’ve never seen that problem with IE unless it’s IE5, 5.5 or possibly 6, and never with Firefox unless it is prior to 2.0.

What versions of IE and Firefox are you using or trying and what operating system are you on.

  • If you are not sure which browser and version of it you are using simply click the link I posted above and you will have your browser information within seconds.
