Post Title Disappears
I’m having trouble with my blog (gearykid.wordpress.com). Everything is working except one thing. After publishing a post, it shows up on my blog normally, but after the page stops loading the title, comments and other things disappear. I can still click where the title should be, and it works, but this is really bothering me. I can’t see comments, which is the worst part. I’m using the Vertigo theme. I have not changed any coding at all, I don’t even know how.
The blog I need help with is gearykid.wordpress.com.
Unless you use the P2 theme, which is a Twitter-like theme, the front pages of your blog will showcase content only. That means comments are collapsed on that page and you cannot change this beacuse the way the comments function is coded into the core of WordPress. By clicking the post title or the comments link the posts on the front page open on their own page where all comments display.
In a new blog one does not have many posts or comments. In an established blog if the comments did not collapse on the front page it would become a mile long in no time flat and page loading time is a page ranking factor. We have only seconds before visitors refuse to wait and click out.
I see another issue on your blog with the layout. If you have been copying and pasting text from elsewhere without using either icon 5 or icon 6 in Row 2 of the visual editor, please see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text
The reason your sidebar has fallen and is displaying below your posts is either due to copying and pasting or it can also be a result of importing text containing invalid HTML. Typically this is caused by an open HTML tag in one of your posts.
Go to Settings > Writing and select “ ___ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then scroll down and click “Save Changes.”
Posts > All Posts, change all your latest posts to Draft, click Update, change them back to Published, click Update again. (You can edit all of them at once: tick the square in front of their titles then select Edit from the Bulk Actions dropdown and click Apply.)
I’m aware of that, but the thing is, when I go to the post itself (click on it) the comments still don’t show. I know I have comments on those posts, but they’re not appearing when I check. Also, the titles of my posts are not showing up on the homepage of my blog.
Oh, sorry. That last post was meant for your first one. I’ll try what you suggested. It’ll probably do the trick. Thank you!
I just clciked into all your posts and found zero comments being displayed. Have you approved the comments in your Dashboard > Comments page http://gearykid.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php
or are they still in the “Pending” folder?
Thanks for the tip. I have to admit, I’m new to WordPress, so I didn’t know I had to approve comments. Embarrassing. Anyway, not to bother you more, but I’ve done the revision you suggested by clicking the “ ___ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and changing my posts to draft and back to published. Oddly, though nothing has changed. Once again, sorry to be a bother.
re: setting up discussion preferences (comments)
This page > Settings > Discussion
Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
We can also override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any post or page.
re: correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
Not to worry as the thme is displaying correctly and if you leave that Wirtiting Setting enabled the software will continue to correct HTML errors.
So as long as I keep the XHTML option checked, WordPress will correct the mistakes? Is this a process that takes time or is is supposed to be immediate (just curious)?
It will always be in operation once it has been enabled.
I’m wondering, does my blog work correctly for you now? Because when I access it, the same things happen.
P.S. I’m sorry for this to carry on so long for you.
