I have followed the Posterous import instructions that has downloaded a 1.5gb zip file to my pc. The PC is saying that “the compressed zip folder is invalid”. Any ideas how to address this? I am running Windows 7 and trying to extract while the folder is in Downloads.

    Thanks

    Ian

The blog I need help with is nickandnat.wordpress.com.

I cannot break into the zip folder to identify the xml file. The folder is about 2.5gb unzipped 1.5gb zipped. Is size the issue?

    Hi @nickandnat,

You will indeed need to unzip .zip file which you got from Posterous, which should result in a folder on your harddrive. You should then be able to open it and access the xml file which you will need to use to import your site.

If for some reason your zip file is not opening or is showing as corrupt, you may need to re-download the file from Posterous and try again.

I have downloaded once from IE and once from Chrome. I have also refreshed the Backup tonight however I get the same message when trying to extract using Windows 7 “Windows cannot complete the extraction. The compressed folder is invalid”.

The zip itself is 1.3gb – is this too large and causing a problem. If so how to reduce the size without losing data?

    Appreciate your help

The file is indeed quite large, though unless you are working on a much older PC your computer should be able to handle it, if slowly. You might want to try downloading a dedicated .zip unarchiver, such as 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/).

If the file cannot be opened because it is in some way invalid, there is nothing that we will be able to do. You will need to reach out to Posterous support and see if there is some solution that they have.

Ok thanks. Getting late here. I will try the alternate Zip utility tonight, then take it up with Posterous (or should it be preposterous) tomorrow and do battle again.

Hooray !!! the alternate zip utility cracked it open. There were 2 xml files but “Head” was only 2kb so took the other one and it seems to be processing ok.

Many thanks for helping us get this sorted. Hopefully it will upload successfully overnight.

    Regards

I did a quick check and 1.1gb has uploaded whereas the zipped folder was 1.3gb (unzipped 2.5gb). No more activity so dont know if it has finished or paused?. If only a portion has uploaded will it duplicate if I run the upload routine again?

    Hi there,

The best way to check to see if your import is done is to make sure that the right number of posts/pages and the right number of images have been imported. You can go to your site’s Dashboard to see how many posts and then to the Media Library to see about the images. The size of the backup file would not be a valid way of comparing as there are multiple version of several files, so sizes will not match.

Thank you for the tip on opening the zip with 7 zip. I couldn’t get the zip to open without it. My old dawg had a blog and I didn’t want to lose it when posterous shut down.
