Pre-fill description, title, alt text and caption of a media

  • Hello,

I regularly use the “post by email” option but I also create posts directly on the web interface sometimes. As I am travelling, i usually don’t have much time on the internet so I’m trying to prepare my posts in advance (post by email option is great for that).

I would like to know if it is possible to prefill the “title”, “alt text”, “description” and “caption” of a media (a picture most of the time) so they are all set when I upload the picture (by email and/or directly on the web interface) because it is the most time consuming part of any internet connection for me. For example by setting some specific tag when posting by email or through the creation of a specific exif (or any over metadata) tag.

I tried to find this information in the media and in the “post by email” section of the help but didn’t find anything.

    Thanks

  • No, it is not. Additionally, Google is now aware that some software does this, and is downgrading blogs that use that software, so you will always be better off to do this manually.

  • Thing is, I don’t mind about google ranking in that case as it is for a personnal blog (intended visitors are family, friends and myself and they all know the address).

    Thanks for the answer.

  • You can always fill in the title, copy it, then just paste it in the other fields. To be honest, this is what I do.

  • @raincoaster, this is very interesting to me too—is it better to paste in the same thing in all the fields than just to leave most of them blank? (I do want readers to find me).

It’s really getting to me how long it takes to upload a lot of photos.

I should probably start another thread on this but the other question I have is whether there is a way to upload a LOT of images all at once, a whole file that can all be in one gallery, for example.

I feel like I spend AGES on uploading photos, it’s really a pain! esp after all the work of taking and photoshopping them—I’m not a photographer, do not enjoy this aspect of illustrating my blog!

  • It is better to fill them with unique content. The Description, for instance, is what the software for blind people reads out, so it actually should be descriptive. But pasting in the same thing in all fields is definitely better than leaving them blank.

Photos are the way MOST blogs get found and linked to, so it pays to optimize them at least a little.

I beleive we have a bulk uploader that still works http://en.support.wordpress.com/media/uploader/

  • The reasoning behind dropping the title attribute and using only the ALT attribute is outlined here: http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/18984

Basically, the developers are trying to improve accessibility and play nicely with screen readers.

There is one more fix coming that will improve the alt-caption-title fallback when sending to the editor so that those who invested in title and left caption and alt blank will have their titles show in the ALT attribute. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/new-media-upgrade-has-major-flaws-wordpress-support-please?replies=26#post-1081764

    Notes:
US Federal Laws For Web Accessibility and Images – All images on commercial or government websites are required by law to feature alternative descriptions within their HTML image tag. Alternate text (ALT) attribute is for situations when an image cannot be loaded and also assists visually impaired people who use apps (screen readers) to read ALT attribute, so what’s in a picture is known. In WordPress, this is set in the ALT Text of the Attachment Details.

  • For now I fill the title and copy/paste it from there. Which mean I can’t fully enjoy the “post by email” feature because for each article, I have to visit my dashboard, load every image (even if it’s just a thumbnail) and edit the properties manually.

It’s still the most time and bandwidth consuming “on the internet” operation of creating a new post. And as I access the internet from libraries (time/bandwidth usually limited) or through my phone’s bluetooth (charged by volume) which is expensive and also slow, I try to improve these operations (Yes, I probably wouldn’t care much if I was at home with a 100Mbps connection).

Having wordpress reading a tag (whether it is Exif or anything else) for each of these attributes would greatly speed up and simplify the process. Or any other clever way I could script a bit would do.

Thanks to all of you for your interest.

  • Thank you Raincoaster I just uploaded a bulk upload, ridiculously easy, this is very exciting. Thanks TT also for the links and info.

I have one more question, is it necessary to fill in alt field in an image for a private blog that nobody but my family can access???
