Hi, new blogger here. Not sure if this is the place for a question/problem, but. . . Here goes: I am working on a page for my blog that will contain money saving tips and tricks I use. I have it set as private but published so I could see how the posts that I was writing for the page would appear. Apparently, my subscribers get an email about my private posts, and can read them but if they click in the email, it takes them to a page that says “this post no longer exists”. Have I done something wrong, or is a “private” post not really that private? Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!!
The blog I need help with is themoversandtherakers.wordpress.com.
When a post is set to Private, it is not visible to anyone(not even to subscribers) that’s the reason why the post link says “this post no longer exists”.
For your subscribers to be able to view the private post you need to invite them(as viewers) to view your Private posts.
Here’s the guide that might help you invite viewers:
Let us know if this helps. Thanks! 🙂
@nepatransplant If I understood you correctly, it’s a Post that you are publishing privately (?), not your entire site, as your site is visible to the public.
Posts that are published privately should be visible only to your site’s Admins and Editors. https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-visibility/
To the best of my knowledge, no email to subscribers/followers should be sent out on such privately published Posts.
Pages that are published privately operate under the same principle. https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-visibility/ Regardless, updates to Pages you create and publish are not sent out to subscribers.
I tagged this for Staff attention. Please be patient for their reply. The weekend tends to be slower.
Good Morning :)
I’ll be happy to take a closer look here. It sounds like the page or post was published and then the privacy setting was edited afterwards. Can you share the page or post titles affected? A direct link would be even better. Thank you :)
Thanks everyone for the replies! Yes, my site is public, it is just one page and, as of yet, one post that are set to private. I am pretty sure I set the visibility to private before I hit publish.
Here is the link to the page:
Whoops, sorry problem with link had http twice . Here it is again

Thanks for clarifying. When I visit that Post, or this page, I get a “Page not Found” error.
Again, only Admins and Editors see privately published posts. If you want to allow only certain regular viewers to see that Post/Page, you might consider password protecting it, however, that is not really “secure.” Besides passwords being shared, once someone has visited that Post or Page, it is accessible again from the same computer without password protection because of the way the browser cookie works. (See the two support guides I linked to earlier on visibility.)
@lizkarkoski – Back to the original question,
Apparently, my subscribers get an email about my private posts, and can read them but if they click in the email, it takes them to a page that says “this post no longer exists”.
Given what @nepatransplant says, what would cause regular subscribers to receive a notification if the Post was privately published? Thanks.
Good Morning –
I’ve just had a look at our email records and there’s no record of any email being sent out to your followers for the private post on the blog. Private posts do not trigger an email notification. If you published a post as public, and then later on changed it to private, your followers would have received that initial email but would not be able to access the post once you change the privacy setting.
What it sounds like may have happened is that your subscribers received an email for a post that was then deleted. This would give them the “this post no longer exists” page message.
I checked the timestamp on the e-mail with my friend. It was received at 7:31 pm. I then viewed the post in Admin which tells me the latest revision was at 7:33 pm. So, i must have changed the privacy later; I apologize for the confusion, I simply didn’t remember doing that. Good to know that it was just operator error (me being the novice operator), and I can use the privacy settings in the way that I thought. Thank you for looking into this matter and resolving my questions. Also, thank you to the other posters for the useful information! Have a great day everyone!
No worries :) take care and best wishes!
