Problems with Widget "Recent Posts"
I have a problem with my widget “Recent Posts” – Since today he is only showing on my blog a list with a maximum a 50 posts. Until yesterday this widget was able to show a list of all my nearly 300 posts on my blog. It would be nice if somebody could explain me that phenomenon or help me to get me back a complete list of my posts with this Widget “Recent Posts”.
The blog I need help with is klausgauger.wordpress.com.
300 posts! good gawd!
Yeah, I know, these are many posts, but until yesterday this recent-posts-widget was able to handle that number without any problem.
So something must have changed and I don´t know why. There must be a reason for it. I used this widget as a directory for my articles or as a list of content.
Yours, Klaus Gauger
Don’t do that. It must take forever to load. Use an Archive page and/or Archives, Category, and Recent Posts widget.
Mine changed too. I can go into the the corrections and place in a new number, but it seems the maximum is still 50. I wonder if someone reset that?
Well, yeah, I guess someone changed and reset that. I have found several recent posts in wordpress-forums complaining about that.
It wasn´t a good Idea to reset this. One function of this recent posts-Widget was that it was also able to create a complete article directory (if you wanted that, of course). It was useful for me. I have 300 posts online and it helped the readers of my blog to get a complete list of my articles.

Suffice to say that loading down a sidebar with links to every post in a blog is bound to increase page loading time which results in people clicking about before the page even loads. Add to that the fact that more and more people are accessing out blogs via mobiles and tablets. that means our future will be responsive width themes (sidebars displaying below posts in mobiles), effective use of custom menus and post formats.
I have more than double your 300 posts and I created static pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ as index pages to my content. They are popular ie. well used. Here are examples:
In addition I have a page with the archives shortcode http://en.support.wordpress.com/archives-shortcode/ on it that provides a complete index to all posts in my blog.
As we have not heard from Staff I have flagged this thread for a Staff response to the changes to the Recent Posts widget.
I can confirm this. There were some fatal errors and timeouts in cases where a blog loaded an extremely large number of posts in the Recent Posts widget or Posts per page setting (in Reading Settings).
As raincoaster and timethief pointed out, your best bet is the archives shortcode on another page.
You could also insert a link to your Archives page in a Text widget below the Recent Posts widget. e.g. “For more posts, please see the Archives page.”
thanks a lot for the brilliant advice to create a page with the archives shortcode.
It worked perfectly fine in my blog. Have a look at it yourself.
Thanks a lot again. You have been a great help for me.
thanks also for your advice. You are probably right. It is probably much safer and smarter to create a page with the archives shortcode as I have done now than to use te recent posts widget for creating a table of contents of your blog.
Thanks a lot again.
Cheers Klaus! :-)
Thanks, Bryan! Have a nice weekend too!
I’ve inserted a link to my Archives page in a Text widget but post titles aren’t fully displayed or half-hidden, why? :(
Can you reply with the blog URL where you’ve inserted a link to your Archives page?
Also, what’s the URL to your Archives page?
Well, this may be fine for blogs, but mine is a podcast and really would like all my shows to remain on my feed!
Why dont wordpress just give user the choice to make their own decision specific to their needs. It’s crazy for a coder to decide for bloggers how many post to show. Why not 49? 48? or show nothing at all?

Okay I get the limiting the blog posts per page setting, but don’t understand why there needs to be a limit to how many post show in the feed. The feed doesn’t load anything on the page, just to subscribers. I would like my podcast feed to show all the shows, especially in ITunes.
