Purchased domain and want to move from WordPress

Hi, I’m working on a blog for a client. They purchased a domain name through WordPress thinking to use WordPress initially but want to move to a blogger site instead. What I want to know is how to move the domain name to blogger? So when you go to the URL you see the blogger website not WordPress.

Blogger has a guide for other hosts, they ask to create CName and A records. I can see where you can add CNames in the Dashboard > Settings > Domains >Edit DNS but it won’t let me put in A records for the main domain. The full article is here: http://www.google.com/support/blogger/bin/answer.py?hl=en-GB&answer=55373

I think I’m close but I’m not sure where to go from here.

The blog I need help with is madesignsandinvites.com.

It’s a bit tricky, but we have a few guides that will walk you through it.

First, access your domain manager: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#domain-manager-login

Now, our domain registrar partner is Wild West Domains, which is actually GoDaddy, so the domain manager is very similar to GoDaddy’s. In that case, follow this guide to finish the procedure: http://help.godaddy.com/article/5112

    Thanks for your reply Macmanx!

I managed to get everything working (whoohoo!) but wordpress prevents editing the A record for the main domain. The issue is if you go to http://www.madesignsandinvites.com it’s the blogger site but if you leave off the www it’s the wordpress site.

I see you can purchase a redirect, will that work for the madesignsandinvites.com? Or is that for external sites only?

No, you don’t want to use a redirect. That’s pretty much the opposite of what you need in this case.

Looking at the guide GoDaddy provided, you can’t actually park your domain like they want you to.

Instead, you’ll need to change your nameservers to theirs.

You can do that following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#update-nameservers

Find the correct nameservers based on the date your purchased your domain at http://help.godaddy.com/article/664#hosted

Thanks again for the reply Macmanx.

I didn’t find anything about specific dates for when I purchased the domain name, but I found in the Godaddy page you linked the following:

If you purchased your domain name registration with another registrar but are using our Off-site DNS, your domain name must use our nameservers. Check with your domain name registrar for specific instructions on how to set your nameservers with them.

To Set Nameservers for Standard DNS Accounts
If you are using our Off-site DNS and have Standard DNS (the basic version of our DNS Manager), you must tell your registrar to update your domain name’s nameservers to:

    Are those the correct nameservers?

Please ignore my previous post, I found them :) Thanks again!

    You’re welcome!

Hi Macmanx, it’s still not working correctly. The www isn’t pointing to the blogger site.

I did find the A Records in the Domain Manager > Zone File Editer and was able to change it to the 4 A records Blogger tells you to change, which fixed a redirecting issue I had in blogger (kept saying You’re being redirected even to internal links). However the forwarding piece in that link you posted previously is missing I think.

Now that I’ve changed the nameservers to point to GoDaddy, can I forward the naked domain through them somehow? Or is there a way to do this through an A record?

Beyond this point, it might be something more suited for Blogger support.

It looks like the domain is going to Blogger, but not being routed to your blog.

Check this guide too and make sure that everything is more or less in line: http://www.google.com/support/blogger/bin/static.py?page=ts.cs&ts=1233381
