Question about new post email notifications

I have a free wordpress.com site. My e-mail followers receive an e-mail when I publish a new post. The entire content of my new post is part of that notification. Other sites that I follow send out notifications that only show the first few lines of the new post, then a click-through link to see the rest. How can I do that? I can’t find a setting for it. Is it something that free sites can’t do? Just curious. Thanks.

The blog I need help with is sambrady.wordpress.com.

Most newer themes display excerpts by default. This Themes showcase filter lists all themes that display excerpts by default: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/blog-excerpts

Most newer themes also have the Content Options panel in the Customizer https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/, which allows you to choose between displaying the full post or an excerpt.

If you want to display only post excerpts on the front page or the blogs page of the blog followed by read more links, you can insert “the more tag” into each post prior to publication.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

The read more tag can be inserted once only into any post to change the front page or main page for posts display from full post to an excerpt. The split in the text does not display to you in preview mode but it will be there after the post is published.

Please Read Go Back and Edit Posts https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/#go-back-and-edit-posts and be sure to click Update to publish the after your editing.

For other ways to split content see > https://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/

However, when it comes to what’s emailed to subscribers it is drawn from our RSS Feed for published posts and we can select to display only a summary and not the full post.

Go to http://sambrady.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php and scroll down.

For each article in a feed, show
    Full text
    __Summary

    Save changes.

    Hi Sandy!
I’m here on a search re: email notifications, but it’s because many posts are not reaching email subscribers…

I think I understand your dilemma, however… If you want only the first part of your posts to be shown, and then expanded when the ‘read more’ is selected, there’s an option on your toolbar… it’s the ‘Insert/read more’ tag which shows up on my ‘compose new post’ toolbar as an icon that looks like an aerial view of a highway.. one line on top, a dotted line in the middle, and another line on the bottom.. all running horizontal.. place that wherever you’d like your post to ‘pause’ … then check it in a separate preview window.

    I hope this helps!

Now to figure out where those AWOL ‘New Post’ notifications go!

I believe I answered this question completely and correctly on May 22nd and even provided the link to the relevant support doc for the more tag https://en.support.wordpress.com/more-tag/

I have no idea why this thread was activated again to provide the same information. who created it.

    P. S. The trailing “who created it. ” can be ignored as it was unintentional.
