question on categories

  1. elizabethdetroit

Hello......I am a new Word Press user:
I can't quite figure out 'categories'. For example, in my first post, I assigned and clicked the 'drawing' category. A sidebar for that category does appear. However, when I click the sidebar only the narrative and not the picture in the post shows up. I've tried multiple times creating categories, but the items don't appear in the categories. I tried making the 'uncategorized' the parent category and putting other categories under that but that didn't work either. What am I missing? Thanks! Beth

  2. Some themes (most in fact and particularity older themes) do display sidebars on all pages. You are using Twenty Eleven and it does not display sidebars on single posts pages. See here for more information on that theme >

  3. In the majority of themes, posts on category or other archive pages show up just as they do on the main posts page. But in some themes only the beginnings of posts are shown, and in a few themes you only get titles or thumbnails. See >

  4. A list of categories or category name will appear in the sidebar when you're writing an article that you put in that category...

  5. @tt: is Twenty Ten..

As your blog is an "Art" blog you may want to select a theme that does display thumbnails on Categories pages >
Adding Categories via the Categories Module >
Adding Categories via the Dashboard >

Yikes! I must have looked at the wrong blog. Twenty Ten doesn't display Thumbnails on Categories/Archives page though.

what a quick response....I understand more now. I see that I need a theme that is correct for an "art" blog so that entire posts will show on categories (also on pages as i am thinking i need to make a static home page and then pages). If I change the theme now....will the things I have put in transfer over? Thanks so much!

  9. Hi there,
You can, of course use, any theme we have available but only a few will display thumbnails on Categories/Archives pages. No data is lost when changing themes. You can go here Dashboard > Appearance > Themes and select a theme and activate it as many times as you choose to. This is the link to the Themes Showcase After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets re-install them where you want them to appear.
