Questions about using a Top Level Domain on my existing blog

    Hello,

I was thinking about buying a Premium plan for my 6 years old wordpress.com blog. It is primarily because of my need for a custom domain and access to all my CSS.

I had some queries in my mind which are confusing me:

    1. What about the existing links to the posts, pictures, assets on my blog. They are all referred by blogname.wordpress.com. How will the change in domain name affect them?
Will there be an automatic redirect given by wordpress.com, and will it be a proper 3XX redirect? If yes, is it paid or for free?

    2. Over the last 6 years, the blog must have gathered some SEO ranking. Will a change in domain flush all the SEO ranking and it will be considered completely new?
Again, are we going to tell the search engine that it is the same blog with 3XX redirects? And how will it affect my SEO?

    3. It says that the TLD “.blog” domain is free with the Premium plan. So, I should assume that it will be always included with it for free, when I renew the next year too?

    4. As I only need 2 features, a custom domain and CSS support, can I pick them separately without the complete “Premium” package?

Kindly answer these queries. Thankful to you!

The blog I need help with is wallofwonders.wordpress.com.

    Hi there,

    1. What about the existing links to the posts, pictures, assets on my blog. They are all referred by blogname.wordpress.com. How will the change in domain name affect them? Will there be an automatic redirect given by wordpress.com, and will it be a proper 3XX redirect? If yes, is it paid or for free?

Your old .wordpress.com address will still work and all traffic will automatically redirect to your new domain.

    2. Over the last 6 years, the blog must have gathered some SEO ranking. Will a change in domain flush all the SEO ranking and it will be considered completely new? Again, are we going to tell the search engine that it is the same blog with 3XX redirects? And how will it affect my SEO?

With a custom domain, you will experience a drop in SEO ranking at first while search engines re-index your site at the new domain, but then it should return to the same level it was before the change.

    3. It says that the TLD “.blog” domain is free with the Premium plan. So, I should assume that it will be always included with it for free, when I renew the next year too?

Exactly. All plans include one custom domain for free. The domain renews (for free) as long as you have an active plan.

    4. As I only need 2 features, a custom domain and CSS support, can I pick them separately without the complete “Premium” package?

You can’t purchase features separately. All the upgraded features are bundled into plans.

Hope I answered your questions. If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.
