Questions to WordPress
I have some questions for WordPress. Clearly there are a lot of disgruntled folks out there over a number of issues that have occurred recently. I sincerely hope that you will take the time to answer these questions as I think others would also like to know as well. My questions for you:
**What prompted the change that when one clicked on a topic, WP went from the grid format to the scroll as you go? Will that be going back to the grid format, or will this remain as it is today?
**Why did WP not notify all users that changes were coming? Having given notice, maybe WP might not have gotten all the complaints from users that are apparent on your support site.
**When is the anticipated date on things returning to a somewhat normal state? All I have been able to find is that things will settle down “soon.” Can you please be more definitive with a time frame?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and hopefully we will all have answers to these questions soon!
The blog I need help with is salmonfishingqueen.wordpress.com.

@timethief – Thank you for showing me these links. You have been really great in trying to help me to understand what is going on with WP. And I thank you for that.
Regarding what I read in the links above, I have to say that I was going uphill on the number of new subscribers, likes and comments. So much so that I was getting indicators from WP that I was doing well. I was getting new subscribers daily. Now, with the new changes, I have not had one new subscriber in a week. My blogs are not being featured under any topic and I use the “popular” tags from the topics page.
I was setting goals with myself on how much better I could do. How can I measure this when my posts do not make the topics pages at all? I was exceeding the previous months views and new subscribers by leaps and bounds. I understand that getting on the topics pages is random. So let me ask this: If I was paying for my blog, would I be featured on the topics pages?
I am really trying to understand, and trying to figure out if I want to stay with WP.
No, paying has nothing to do with being on the topics pages. The thing is, the topics pages are severely broken right now and given how some things go around here, it might be weeks before they get fixed.
WordPress has done some serious screwing up over the past few months and I had hopes it might slow down or even reverse, but they seem bent on making everything they touch harder for users and visitors and more of a pain in the a$$ .
If someone tells me they want to start a blog and asks me what I recommend, I’m now at a loss as to what to tell them since there aren’t any alternatives to wordpress.com out there that can even come close, but then again, I can’t recommend wordpress.com anymore because of the crap they’ve done lately.
“What prompted the change that when one clicked on a topic, WP went from the grid format to the scroll as you go?”
That’s the fad they’re currently obsessed with. If Facebook does it, WP must do it.
“Why did WP not notify all users that changes were coming?”
Because they don’t respect users. They consider us beta testers, and they’re only interested in bug reports. When a thread with complaints becomes too long, they just close the thread.
“When is the anticipated date on things returning to a somewhat normal state?”
Depends on what the next WP whim will be.
When is the anticipated date on things returning to a somewhat normal state?
I think what we are experiencing right now IS the new “normal.”
@ TSP LOL!
@TSP ποταμοῖσι τοῖσιν αὐτοῖσιν ἐμϐαίνουσιν, ἕτερα καὶ ἕτερα ὕδατα ἐπιρρεῖ.
You can never step into the same river twice.
Heraclitus. I half expected Panos to jump in here, what with it being Greek. Heraclitus is my favorite philosopher.
Yeah, but this is a mud hole, not a river.
The Greeks would tell you that anything worthwhile is never easy.
@rain: Ok then!
Actually “you can never step into the same river twice” is a good translation of this passage:
Ποταμῷ γὰρ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμβῆναι δὶς τῷ αὐτῷ
The passage you quoted is more obscure, because the syntax isn’t correct (so there’s probably something missing from the surviving fragment), and because of the phrase that follows:
ποταμοῖσι τοῖσιν αὐτοῖσιν ἐμβαίνουσιν ἕτερα καὶ ἕτερα ὕδατα ἐπιρρεῖ· καὶ ψυχαὶ δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν ὑγρῶν ἀναθυμιῶνται.
to the same rivers step in different and different waters flow upon; and the souls fume up from the liquids.
@rich: Heracleitus on mud holes isn’t very enlightening. Perhaps you’d care for this one instead:
ἀξύνετοι ἀκούσαντες κωφοῖσιν ἐοίκασι· φάτις αὐτοῖσιν μαρτυρεῖ παρεόντας ἀπεῖναι.
Having heard, the imprudent resemble the deaf; to them befits the saying: while present they are absent.
Panos, that is perfect!
Heraclitus has all the answers. Clearly Wikipedia only has bad translations.
I inadvertently deleted from my primary sidebar something that I didn’t know I was deleting I could tell you why but it’s not important at this point.
I deleted the word ‘about’ which is my home page and
I deleted the word and link ‘posts’ which took readers from my about page to my blogs Is there a ‘simple’ way to correct this
I guess I should leave things I don’t fully understand alone because fixing them is worse. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated….Diane
The question I asked above re deleting ‘about’ and ‘posts’ is resolved because I changed my theme and it came back..However when I went to add the Tag Cloud Widget it wasn’t available to add…I think in my confusion trying to change things around I may have deleted it instead of just moving it back into the available ones..that delete key is bad for me because I don’t always think of what exactly I’m deleting…so it remains how do I get back the tag cloud widget ? This is really a learning process…Thanks for any help…Diane
