Re-registering Cancelled Domain
I’m preparing to relaunch my site on WordPress.org and in preparation I registered a domain name through WordPress.com. However, I later found out that it’s less expensive to register the domain elsewhere since I’ll be migrating to managed hosting. I cancelled the domain but I’m wondering when it will become available again for re-registration on another registrar (it no longer directs anywhere, but still appears as reserved on registrar sites). I’ve seen support threads give me a timeline of anywhere from a few days to a year; if it’s a year I might bite the bullet and ask to reverse the cancellation. Does anyone have an idea of when the domain will open up again?
The blog I need help with is crowmunist.wordpress.com.
Registrars will hold domains that are registered and quickly canceled as a defense against fraud. It usually takes a couple of weeks for the domains to be released. Though there is always the risk that they won’t be released at all. It is rare, but it does happen from time to time for whatever reason.
Let me know if you would like me to try and reverse the cancellation. To be honest, if it were me, I would take that path and then transfer to the cheaper registrar in 60 days.
Though please keep in mind that if you are using a domain that isn’t registered at WordPress.com with your WordPress.com site, you will need the $13/yr Domain Mapping upgrade.
Hi rootjosh! Thank you for your reply. The issue I’m having is that I don’t want to use the domain at WordPress.com, but at WordPress.org. I want to relaunch my blog on a managed hosting service. If we reversed the cancellation, would I still be able to use the domain at WordPress.org? Could you confirm that I’d be able to change the name servers to point there? If so, I’ll trust your advice and let’s try to reverse the cancellation.
I’m sorry if these questions seem redundant – I’m not terribly tech-savvy and in researching for the move I’ve had to absorb a lot of information at once (and clearly, I haven’t been entirely successful). Thank you for your patience.
If you are registered at WordPress.COM, changing where the name servers point is simple and straightforward – so you can use a custom domain registered here with most any other host
f we reversed the cancellation, would I still be able to use the domain at WordPress.org? Could you confirm that I’d be able to change the name servers to point there?
Yes, you would use these instructions:
I can try and reverse the cancellation. I will let you know if I am successful, it typically takes 12-48 hours.
If successful, you will need to re-purchase the yearly domain registration and I will send you a payment link for that transaction.
The cancellation reversal was successful.
I have sent you an email to the address associated with your WordPress.com account. Please let me know if you did not receive it.
I received the email and sent payment yesterday, but the domain isn’t showing up in “Domains” section of my account. Do you know when I’ll have access to it so I can change the name servers?
All fixed. You should be able to see it now.
Please let me know if you still cannot.
