    Hello,

I contacted WP support regarding an issue where the read more button vanishes off the front page when you use a read more (line tag) and excerpt within the post itself.

We do see that if you use 366 words and then insert the read more (line tag) the button reappears on the front page.

We would like the ability to reduce this word count so that we customize what text is shown on the front page (both in the header and under recent posts).

    Thanks,

    Robert

The blog I need help with is cela.ca.

To have more control over that, use a More Block: https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/blocks/more-block/

This will allow you to split the post exactly as desired every time. :)

    Hi, thanks for your response.

We have added the “more’ block” and the “Read More” button is now displaying within the rotating header – thank you!

However the read more button still does not display on the front page under “Recent Bog Posts”. It’s a simply an empty space.

To be clear, we feature the “some” posts in both areas – rotating header and recent blog posts.

    Your assistance is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Robert Huff

I’m seeing several green Read More buttons, just one missing but the post doesn’t seem longer:

That’s the one that has an excerpt but is missing the button, correct?

I’ll see if I can duplicate this on a test site.

    Hello!

The post that contains the Read More is:
    https://cela.ca/canadian-climate-law-and-vulnerable-communities/

    The read more is inserted right after the first paragraph;
CELA’s ED Theresa McClenaghan spoke on the topic of Canadian climate law and vulnerable communities at the University of Western Ontario’s Climate Change symposium.

The snip screen you provide does show the post missing the read more button.

Do know, the post above it “Healthy Great Lakes” is showing a green read more button, however in order to create that I had to add the following code the excerpt area within the post (as you can see its not the same as the others).

    <button type=”button”>Read More</button>

Can you can also provide me with the HTML code that will duplicate your “Read More” button that contains the arrow with circle?

Thanks for duplicating this issue on a test site, I hope we can find a solution.

@celalao I was able to duplicate the problem. For the time being, if possible, just let the posts generate their own excerpts. You can use a different message for social media, I think.

We’ll report back here once that’s resolved.

Hi, Can you provide me with the html code that would duplicate your Read More button design, please.

We will use the code in the excerpt section as a temporary method until a this is resolved.

    Thanks,

    Robert

You could use something like this in the Excerpt box:

    <div class="more-link-container"><a href="LINK TO POST" class="more-link">Read More <span class="screen-reader-text">POST TITLE</span></a></div>

Just note whatever text you add there can also get added to the og:description. When you go live and start sharing on Facebook and what not, I *think* if you set a custom Social Media / SEO description that could help.

Noting too that has to be added to The Excerpt. It won’t show up if you just put it in your HTML for the post, because the HTML will be stripped for the auto-generated excerpt. Also, you probably wouldn’t want it in your post anyway.
