Reader Update

  1. I have published two posts this week and neither of them displayed a single photo on the Reader. Beautiful photos, four or more on each post, and all that shows up on the Reader are a few words. Using Windows 10, Microsoft Edge. I have many complaints about the new Reader, all of which have been voiced and/or censored by others. But no graphics on the Reader is really annoying.

  2. I have to say that I find the new reader layout pretty dire. I suspect the number of clicks to view blogs has gone through the roof. For the most part I follow photographic blogs - it's just hard work to look at them now.
Style over substance, the need to fiddle with something that wasn't broken, change for the sake of it.......

  3. @susanrnet

Thank you for the feedback! You asked for Reader themes. Rather than offering themes, we typically try to make the best balance possible for a feature and keep iterating.

Other than the way it displays images, I like it too.

We are listening to the feedback about images! An update that lets you click to expand a photo has just been added. This will allow you to view the full photos in stream, without having to click to the post and back. We worked really hard to get this out to address some of the concerns. More changes based on feedback will likely be made. Stay tuned!

I thought the idea of Reader was to give people reason to view our posts not make it easier to avoid going to the post itself. Or maybe I am misunderstanding.

  5. @tildy1, thank you for the feedback. We added a click-to-expand option for photos which restores some of the old format (with a click) and also keeps the amount of scrolling smaller than before.

  6. @grahaminhats, aha, yes, I read your last comment as about the Reader as a whole which was not correct because you clearly said recommendations. Sorry about that! We decided to roll out recommendations everyone because we hope it will benefit more people and because we want to avoid adding too many settings for things when we can avoid it because otherwise it could easily become bloated with too many options.

  7. @pellymade, I've sent you an email to try to help address the concerns you have posted that require a bit more in-depth review because there are a lot of other replies going on back and forth which make it hard to follow here in the forums.

  8. @merrylark, we added a click-to-expand option for photos which may help. Past that, if there's something funny going on with a specific blog, then I can help take a look and test it to see what's going on if you reply back here with a link to the blog.

  9. @jeteliot, I checked the latest post on your blog as a test:
    https://jeteliot.wordpress.com/2016/12/23/wishing-you-this-holiday-season/

And I found that the images are not being picked up by the Reader because they are too small. The current requirement is images must be embedded at 350px or more.

  10. @rakmilphotography, the goal is to connect more people with more blogs they love.

  11. I forgot to mention that sometimes when I hit the "back" button, I am redirected back to the top, instead of where I was before I clicked on a post. It happens 2 out of 10 times, but it's very annoying.

  12. @designsimply

You failed to answer the question. That is, putting your wishes above that of the customer, shows a disrespect.

More: There have been an increasing number of complaints about censorship. You will be hearing more about that after the holidays.

  13. Bonjour et Joyeux Noel Designsimply,

Well done - The one click for 'letterbox' pictures works very well - unfortunately not for thumbnails. But progress is being made and can you thank everyone for listening to our views and actually responding in a very positive way.

    Regards

    Dan

@cosgroveloretta, thank you for the feedback about the full post design in the Reader. Readers can now click "Visit Site" at the top of the full post view to go directly to your site. There is also a "Visit" link on the main page at https://wordpress.com/ which does the same thing.

Ah. And how many visitors would go the extra click if they can read the blog post in it's entirety on the bland reader? Hm? Let me guess – just a tiny fraction.

Do you seriously expect those of us bloggers who paid for their premium themes (I'm at my fifth atm) and invested a lot of time to make their blogs look and feel exactly the way they wanted to be happy with WordPress' attitude of knowing better than us what's good for our blogs? Really?

I'm not here to connect with as many other blogs and viewers as possible. I blog for my own enjoyment, I spend more time polishing the look of my blog (which is very satisfactory for me) than posting stuff, and I want the handful of visitors I attract to see my blog the way I like to present it by default. Just as it was before this update, and I saw lots of bloggers, small and big, who used this opportunity in my reader.

So please don't try to decide for everybody what's the best way to present their blogs, and give the bloggers the freedom to chose if they want their full content in the reader or not.

    Thank you.

I like the new reader. It's clear and the images are nicely proportioned. The overall look is crisp, clean and professional.

If the view is as bad as some report, try a different browser.

I use an older desktop with the Epic privacy browser and found it was the best for WordPress.

  16. @All

The Reader is not only slow but wastes space. Surely this design would be better :-

    https://freedfromtime.wordpress.com/2016/12/21/wp-reader-changes-wouldnt-this-be-better/

  17. It still fails to present portrait photos correctly even with the new click option (why do I have to do something extra to look at a photo?). I also think that the behaviour should be consistent with all post types, photos in either mode and posts with more than the apparently arbitrarily selected number of words.

  18. Also, why is browser behaviour inconsistent with tablet, smartphone and your own desktop app? Or are they next??

@designsimply If the goal is to "connect people with more blogs they love", that can be accomplished by letting them explore WordPress at their own pace and following up on material that interests them. Not by WordPress deciding for them what they should like.

  20. Too bad there's no 'like' button on these comments, as so many people have articulated their frustrations well.

It would be nice to keep the original format for creating posts, and on the stats, when we use the old stats and are asked why, there needs to be a comment option as well, as none of the answers provided really reflect the reason the old was better.. the old provided so much more info at a glance, and now the new provides things that i could care less about.

the search function info might as well be omitted, because it usually shows many came to the site via a search, yet that info ---- good gracious! via a saved llink to my preferred stats page, i just followed it to a totally different one via that link, and it shows all my sites - not the primary one, and i don't have the time to sort through it to try to find the basic original one..

that, i suspect, is why your stats show that few people are using the old options - we can't flipping find them anymore!

    this disgusts me... logging off....

  21. Interesting, several people seem to be blogging photos that appear to be a gradient from white at top to grey lower. Unless they are plagiarists I think this may be a bug. Noted whilst using a browser and 'reading' the tag photography.

  22. There is a new feature that displays an image of a users work at the top of each tagged search in the reader. This appears to refresh after some period of time when replaced by the work of another user. Sadly this behaviour also prompts a refresh in the browser sending you right back up to the top.

  23. Along similar lines to @feralc4t - Why does the header in my redstuffdan 'tag' search show another bloggers photograph albeit in a cut off letterbox format, with a credit to that photographer - that makes no sense at all - or is this all part of the 'Master Plan'?

Interesting, several people seem to be blogging photos that appear to be a gradient from white at top to grey lower

At first I thought your comment was meant as a joke, a sarcasm to the fact that the "new Reader" is slower than snails... The gray gradient or only title post, or total white gallery post, or failed to load post, are the new reality and a common thing in every tag nowadays (...)
Many people noted the sluggish reader here, no answer to that though...
I really really really hope that it's a bug, but I don't think that's the case.
Take a look at what grahaminhats has to say in the "stats feedback" thread (comment posted on Jan 4th).
The Reader was for me a daily pleasure and a way to relax and enjoy; now it's a tiring, disappointing, enervating procedure and that sucks!
Since wp won't take it back, the only thing I could do to cope was upgrading my internet connection. I await for that to happen, hoping it will give me at least a one-sided solution...

By the way, I found out yesterday by mistake that wp will not send the usual annual report for our blogs!
Just another unannounced "innovation"!!! Well done_

I have to take back my initial compliments to the new Reader as now the videos are showing up in the Feed again. I'm very disappointed, to say the least.

    Hi,

I skimmed through this topic, but I didn't see an answer to my question.

Prior to the changes to Reader, I had it set up that only a portion of my blog post appeared in the Reader and you needed to click to continue reading and that would take you to my blog. Is that option still available? If so, how can I apply it to my blog?

Thanks so much for your help.

Curious to know the exact photo size specs for our blog posts so the main picture is in right proportion in the Reader? Now I'm using a large sized (640 X 420, or 420 X 640) photo but sometimes it shows up in landscape position and cropped badly, other times the video shows up, and other times it looks OK.

  28. @feralc4t

Also, why is browser behaviour inconsistent with tablet, smartphone and your own desktop app? Or are they next??

The apps most often follow the web updates, but not always.

Interesting, several people seem to be blogging photos that appear to be a gradient from white at top to grey lower. Unless they are plagiarists I think this may be a bug. Noted whilst using a browser and 'reading' the tag photography.

The gradient you are seeing is the placeholder before an image is loaded. If you have a slow internet connection, then you are likely to see those placeholders more often than others but the images should eventually load. You can check your connection speed at http://www.speedtest.net/

There is a new feature that displays an image of a users work at the top of each tagged search in the reader. This appears to refresh after some period of time when replaced by the work of another user. Sadly this behaviour also prompts a refresh in the browser sending you right back up to the top.

To try testing this, I opened the photography tag page https://wordpress.com/tag/photography and scrolled down quite a bit and then left those windows open. Then I left the windows alone for a few hours. When I checked back on them, the scroll positions were in the same place as before. I used Firefox 50.1.0 on Mac OS X 10.12 in my testing. May I ask what browser and OS are you using?

  29. @redstuffdan

Along similar lines to @feralc4t - Why does the header in my redstuffdan 'tag' search show another bloggers photograph albeit in a cut off letterbox format, with a credit to that photographer?

Tags are not specific to one person. If someone else uses the redstuffdan tag, then their posts may also be used for headers on that tag page.

The option to limit content in the Reader using the summary feed setting was removed several weeks ago, and the option is no longer available.
