Readers getting error messages while trying to comment — cannot comment
I’ve had a number of regular readers email me recently to let me know they were unable to comment on my blog. All of them have commented regularly before, so I am unaware of what the issue is.
One reader has her own WordPress blog and tried to comment using Internet Explorer. She received an error message.
Another reader/email subscriber tried to comment and received an error message. She was on her Ipad, but says she’s used that before to comment. She’s in my top 3 commenters listed…and has been able to comment as recently as last week.
I have 3 others that have emailed me the same issue.
Please advise if it is something I have done on my end or how to resolve the issue. I haven’t made any changes recently to comments that I’m aware of. Thank you so much!

UPDATE: I had another reader contact me and say:
I tried to comment but when I tried it erased my comment and told me I had to be logged in to comment with my email address, but it didn’t tell me how to do that. I’m using Firefox on my laptop.
I checked my settings > discussion settings and I do have email required checked. I have not changed anything regarding this recently, so I am unaware of what the issue could be. please advise.
I am seeing other forums opened to what seems to be the same issue.
the people trying to comment must have old wordpress accounts they no longer use? one commenter said she has a gravatar account she was trying to use, but has never opened a wordpress account–she’s on blogger.
I’m at a loss for what to do here to ensure my readers can comment easily.
We’ve recently updated our commenting system. Now, if someone tries to comment with an email address that’s attached to a WordPress.com account, they’ll need to sign into WordPress.com before they can comment.
If commenters have forgotten their password they can request a reset:
If someone tries to comment with an email that’s not tied to a WordPress.com account, they won’t need to sign up for an account (unless you’ve enabled this option at Settings -> Discussion).

I can understand that.
Is there any way around this issue: When someone types out a comments, puts in their email address as a guest and then gets the “log in to WordPress” notification, they’re telling me they lose their comment they wrote. I wouldn’t expect them to take the time to type that all out again while trying to figure out their WordPress login. Any way the comment can stay in the comment field until they cancel or log in?
There is no specific way to do that now, but we are working on similar improvements.

Thank you! And just an FYI — I’m still getting emails from commenters who only have a Gravatar account. They are telling me they’re logged in to their gravatar, and still cannot comment using the email address linked to it. What should I be telling them? I gave them the reset their password link..thoughts?
