Reclaim my old username

Hello. I’m attempting to reclaim my old username. When I try to switch to the username I use elsewhere online, I am told the username already exists. When I try recover the password for that username, I am told the username does NOT exist. Which is it? :)
I’m pretty certain that I had signed up for WordPress.com way back and would love to get my name back here.
The blog I need help with is edtechgurus.wordpress.com.
