I have a blog named talkingbollocks.net. I have the domain name too.
It’s been running for around three years and the hit count is growing.
I sometimes wonder if I should rename it. I know I could export it, create a new blog and import the old content.
However, I think that if I did this I might lose something in the way of hits.
I’m unclear about this but I guess the search engines have built up some data on my site. Maybe the fact that it has history helps it up the listings?
Does anybody have any thoughts on this? Has anybody done it and if so then how were their hits affected?
Thanks in advance.
The blog I need help with is talkingbollocks.net.
YES, you will lose a great deal in the way of hits by renaming AND moving your blog. I mean, you might as well just throw the every pageview you’ve ever had down a well.
Renaming your blog will cost you a few readers. Moving your blog to a new URL will cost you a LOT of readers. Doing both of those things will, quite frankly, cost you ALL OF YOUR READERS.
I’m serious about this. Readers know your blog by name. They may know it by URL. Search engines know it by URL and may know it by name as well. Do not, whatever you do, change BOTH at the same time.
I’m sorry I busted the ALL CAPS out on you, but I don’t want to see this happen.
Why, exactly, do you want to move it? Why do you want to change the name?
Thanks for response.
The reason to rename it is that the swearing may deter some readers. Not sure about that.
I have about 30 registerred followers, obviously there would be the issue of moving them over.
I don’t know how many other hits are generated by people knowing the domain name.
Also, re your comment about search engines knowing the site by URL and name……..true……but would they relearn quickly or is that history worth something?
