I’ve run a blog for about 3 years and I usually upload an image to each post.
I resize the image in photoshop but usually end up resizing it using the HTML code too.
I just reduce the height and width to something more like 400 high. Whatever looks rights.
For the past couple of weeks I have found that if I do this the picture juts out to the right and, weirdly, seems ot go behind the strip of widgets down the right hand side.

That’s not reasonable: you should downsize copies of your images to the pixel width you need in the post, and upload and insert these copies in real size. This will result in faster loading of your blog, no issues with Explorer, and no issues with the occasional WP bug; plus it will give you better quality as well, because images downsized by WP lose some color and sharpness: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/01/16/image-quality/
