responding to a spammer`s comment
A spammer has correctly been picked up by my askimet. However, on reading his/her comments, I feel I have to respond to the comments just to tell them to get lost. Should I do this? I know it probably encourages them but I really want to tell them where to go.
Blog url: http://odetojapan.wordpress.com/
The blog I need help with is odetojapan.wordpress.com.
Don’t encourage them – just leave it in spam – they want to conversation – sort of like Trolls – ignore them and spend your time doing other things – yes some will come back day after day – some get paid by the comment that is posted so if you reply to them they get paid more –
Oh I didn
t know that they get paid, thank you auxclass. Though they seem to work for commercial entities as their websites imply so that would prove your point. I just got one which insulted my spelling. How offensive, especially considering their grammar was so bad and my spelling is not : P. Thats partly why I wanted to respond. Anyway, I won
t. Thanks again. I hope theyre not reading this.
Otherwise, and maybe this doesn
t belong here, but why does my response on this form split into different parts every time I put in contracted forms of verbs (didnt, won
t, thats, they`re)? And why did I get put in to the Other Languages support forum?
Not a wise idea. Just delete them, or let the Spam system delete them.
I get stuff all the time that says my site is messed up – that I need to use H1 tags better etc –
I just ignore them – telling you that your site is broken or not good SEO is a standard trick – you have had your blog for three weeks – trust Akismet it is almost never wrong –
My spelling is junk – that is why I use a spell checker and read all Posts at least 4 times before Posting – many times I will let the Post “age” for a few hours and read them again – I do a lot of how to do articles – I will sometimes get other people to check what I have in a Draft – just regular friends can help by reading your Posts if you are worried about major goofs
PS – it helps if you grow a thick skin when dealing with spammers –
Just ignore them
Thanks for the advice. I agree Askimet is on the ball so far. I will delete them from here on.
Just to be clear here do not “delete“. Mark spam as spam and click “empty spam”.
The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam. The worst of all spam containing malware and viruses is not sent to us. It’s removed as it could bring down many blogs if opened.
If Akismet has sequestered spam comments simply click “empty spam” button. If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it’s spam.
On the spam that Akismet catches it takes only seconds to click “empty spam” and you don’t even have to click “empty spam” if you don’t want to. Akismet will maintain comments it has caught for 15 days from the time they were received, and then it will delete the comment automatically.
For more information please take the time to read “5 things every blogger should know about spam” on this page Akismet: How it works http://akismet.com/how/
Automatically close comments on articles older than __ days – This setting can be used to have comments closed on articles that are X days old. As an example, if you only want articles to accept comments for 30 days you would check the box and type 30 into the text field. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#other-comment-settings
