Responsive theme

  • I am very new to wp, so apologies if this is a daft question. I like the responsive theme because I can change things around. But I would like to also change some colours and page set ups (menu bar in any colour but black, logo to display on the left rather than squeezed in on the right for example). Is this possible and what menu do I need to do that in? Or is this just a simple sample style that I have to use as is? Ideally, I would like to customise nearly everything but I cannot afford an expensive subscription. So am I better off working on wordpress.org and download a theme?
Any help or suggestions about what theme might work better for me are much appreciated :)

  • With Responsive you would need Custom CSS is available with the Premium or Business plans. – to make the changes you want.

With WordPress.org, you can make any type of customization, but you do need to be comfortable with HTML and CSS to do it. You would also need to pay for a hosting package.

If you want to all the benefits of WordPress.com – no software to update or maintain, security taken care of for you, built-in community, support, etc. – but want the flexibility of customizing your theme’s colours and layout, the Premium plan would let you do that, and at $99 it’s on a par with what you’d probably pay for a basic hosting plan elsewhere.

Is this the site in question? ulrikeascher.wordpress.com

If it’s a site about goddesses I think another theme might better reflect your content. Responsive is a little conservative/traditional, I find.

Here are a couple of free themes you might want to look at:

    Lovecraft – https://lovecraftdemo.wordpress.com/
    Libre – https://libredemo.wordpress.com/
    Nucleare – https://nuclearedemo.wordpress.com/

Let me know if I can help with anything else!

  • Something else to keep in mind is that some themes have built-in free colour schemes, so even without any upgrades you can modify the colour palette. You’ll find those in the Customizer’s Colors & Backgrounds panel. For example, there are four free (featured) palettes included with Lovecraft:

Customize Lovecraft Lovecraft is a beautiful two column theme for bloggers

Feel free to test out a few themes to see what options are available in each.

  • Thank you so much for your ideas Kathryn, they were really helpful. I have looked at a lot of themes and I think I might have found something that will work for the broader ideas that I am planning for the blog. I’ll keep looking though, thanks again for the tips!

  • You’re welcome, glad to hear you’re on track!
