retaining old hosted domain links when moving to wordpress.com

  1. I want to move from typepad.com to wordpress.com. I have a blog at typepad.com with over 1000 posts and a hosted domain - see http://www.kingscrossenvironment.com

when i move to wordpress.com I don't want there to be a difference for people who linked to my old site on typepad.com and internal links - ie all the old links to work. Is it possible to move the blog from typepad to wordpress.com and retain the urls/links i have accrued over the years?

here's an example url on the typepad.com site i would like to retain after moving
    http://www.kingscrossenvironment.com/2010/12/gla-members-vist-kings-cross-to-talk-open-spaces-and-the-bridge-over-the-tracks.html

I run several wordpress.com sites and have read a fair few support articles on importing and hosting domains but i can't find one that goes into detail on this.

We do not have FTP access to free blogs from and being free hosted by WordPress.com and we cannot upload plugins into them. Only WordPress.ORG free standing installs for self hosting have plugins. If you are asking about a WordPress.ORG install then you need to post to the correct forum http://wordpress.ORG/support/

Are you referring to domain mapping? http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/

  7. thanks @timethief yes i am referring to domain mapping - i have mapped a domain already to my typepad.com blog. I want to export the blog to wordpress.com (it's much better than typepad these days) and then map the domain onto the wordpress.com blog.

but in doing so keep the url structure and exisitng inbound links to the old blog - so if someone linked to

    http://www.kingscrossenvironment.com/2010/12/gla-members-vist-kings-cross-to-talk-open-spaces-and-the-bridge-over-the-tracks.html

on typepad the url will take them to the same post on wordpress.com after domain mapping

can that be done? any help gratefully received

  8. WordPress with the domain mapping seems to be really good at figuring out and redirecting URL requests. In the case of the above, wordpress will 99.99% of the time figure it out and redirect to the correct post on your blog since the post title is in the old URL The only real difference here will be that in addition to year and month, there will also be a day 2010/12/15 and there will not be .html on the end of the URL. WordPress should have absolutely no trouble getting your visitors to the correct place on the new site.
