RSS Feed

Is having an RSS feed considered A Good Thing, by and large? – or is it only necessary/useful to commercial sites?
I’m doing my absolute best to get my head around this subject, and reading up on it within WordPress Support; but it’s a bit like having quantum mechanics explained, dunno why.
:-{The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There’s nothing to get your head around – honest. See here Video: RSS in Plain English http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0klgLsSxGsU
All WordPress blogs have multiple RSS feeds built-in and you can read about them here http://en.support.wordpress.com/feeds/
Your RSS Feed URL for posts (entries) is: http://margaretrosestringer.com/feed/
Note: Firefox has a built in feed reader but Chrome doesn’t so a feed reader extension is required. Here’s the link for that extension https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/nlbjncdgjeocebhnmkbbbdekmmmcbfjd
They exast and are necessary. we don’t -
timethief, you’ll want to scream and tear your hair, but I STILL don’t get it. Truly sorry … (Google Reader doesn’t exist any more, did you know?)
Why do some WordPress.com blogs show the little orange RSS icon and most not?
Should I?
Am I right in deducing after following your links that the Reader is an RSS feed? – and if so, I can only revert to my second question … -
Why do some WordPress.com blogs show the little orange RSS icon and most not?
Blogger choice & some Themes have the feed icons built in
Should I?
Yes if you want to make it easy for people to follow your blog (I also use the subscribe by email Widget for those that don’t like or don’t want to use the RSS feed
that the Reader is an RSS feed
No – but the Reader displays the RSS feed from many blogs in one place
-
Ah, another new victim! – I shall add you to my list of forelock-tugging slaves … [grin]
So, yachtie, what do I need to do to enable RSS feed (why did I type THREE ‘e’s?!) on my WordPress.com blogsite, please? -
It’s already enabled and in fact there are multiple builtin feeds enabled on your blog. To display RSS links widget see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/rss-links-widget/

The great thing about WP.com, to be honest, is that techies have done all the understanding and setup for you, so really you can’t go too far wrong if you just get on it and blog. Everything works.
We’ve all gone through that learning period. As soon as you hear about pings, you ask what you have to do to ping, and the answer is: it’s built in. Same with the RSS feed. You can’t even DISABLE it here without setting your blog to a semi-invisible setting.

I know, I know … and I’m constantly reminded of that, raincoaster. But I spent 31 years living with a bloke who knew everything and could do just about anything, and I never needed to do other than frown in incomprehension before having whatever it was explained and demonstrated. At my age, trying to work techo stuff out is a real challenge, which is why I need you lot to spell it out in words of one syllable. Now, were you HERE, and able to SHOW me, it would be a horse of a different colour.
Which reminds me; if I click on someone else’s blog’s RSS icon, I just get that pageful of stuff. If I got it right from the links provided by timethief et al., I should C+P the URL into the Reader … -
You should just click to subscribe via the reader using the grey admin bar. It allows you to Follow a blog in the reader with one click, so just use that on WordPress.com blogs.
