seriously good photo and video theme that a comuter dummy can use

  • I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this, but what the hell I am going to ask the question and hopefully get some suggestions.

I am a photographer and videographer working in the travel industry and need to get my work out there for people to find and possibly buy (fingers crossed). So need a theme that covers both photos and videos plus a supporting blog on my trips.

Importantly I am not a computer expert and over the years have really struggled getting the themes I have purchased to do what I want them to do. My biggest problem is I have a brain problem that prevents me from understanding written instructions, audio visual.. no problems, but written means absolutely nothing, there is no comprehension. Sounds weird I know, but it is very real and a significant problem. It’s actually quite common, it is just that mine is on the extreme end.

Because of this I have never been able to make a theme work, so I have just given up. In my files I have several themes I have tried, together with various plugins, but been unable to get anything to produce a satisfactory result, they are just too complex… strange as it may seem.

So what I am looking for is a simple and beautiful theme which handles photos, some form of commerce system, videos and a blog that I can put together and make work by watching detailed video instructions which DON’T assume one is super computer literate, hell I am the wrong side of 60 so computers are still a real challenge, social media is even worse!!!

    I would love some suggestions.

  • Hi there!

If you want to setup a full eCommerce option (with a shopping cart and all), you’ll need to create a self-hosted WordPress site, instead of using WordPress.com since our eCommerce options have been reduced right now.

If you want the full shopping cart type setup, you could get a hosting plan, install WordPress and then use a plugin, like WooCommerce, to setup a shop. If you haven’t used self-hosted WordPress before, this page goes over the basic differences between it and WordPress.com: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Alternatively, if you don’t need a full cart, you can use PayPal buttons on a WordPress.com site if you’d like: https://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/

If you decide to setup your site here on WordPress.com, you can browse themes that are great for photography here:
https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/photography/. Specifically, maybe Saga (https://wordpress.com/themes/saga/) or Camera (https://wordpress.com/themes/camera/) would be a good option.

(Note on themes: If you plan to switch to self-hosted WordPress, don’t buy a theme here, as they don’t transfer. Some themes are available both places, but aren’t purchased in the same spot.)

Let me know if you have any questions! :)

  • Thank you for your suggestions, I had a browse and both look to be terrific themes, they also seem to work on my phone which is a good start.

It would be great to see what users have done with these in creating their own sites.

  • You’re welcome!

Both themes have a demo site you can check out to see all of the different features and get a feel for how they can look.

    Here’s Saga’s demo: https://sagademo.wordpress.com/.

And Camera’s demo: https://camerademo.wordpress.com/. (This user site using Camera looks great too: http://schmootography.com/.)

To try them out yourself, I’d recommend adding content to a few pages and posts, then follow the setup instructions on the theme’s information pages, and you’ll see your site start to take shape with your own content displayed. If you purchase Camera and decide it’s not right for you, you can get a refund on it for up to 30 days, so no worries there. :)

  • Love Schmoo’s site, though had some problems loading on other devices, the Samsung tablet lost the menu when vertical and it wouldn’t load on my phone at all. I could only load schmoo.smugmug.com and another siteschmoo.photographyblogsites.com, both of which look to be independent of her primary site, though the “photos” in the menu redirects to her smugmug site.

Concerning about the problems with devices other than a PC as I was under the impression this template was supposed to work on them.

  • Did you look at the theme’s demo on your different devices? I would go by that more, as we don’t know what the user’s specific setup could be or any changes they’ve made while viewing that way.

The demo site (https://camerademo.wordpress.com/) will give the best indication of how it can work right from the start.

For the menu on smaller devices, it’s using the mobile menu called a hamburger that is three little lines at the top right corner. If you tap there, it’ll expand to show the full menu.
