Single post on page one, multiple posts on category, search pages

I like to keep things minimal. A single post on page one is easy to achieve. I can’t find a simple, minimal theme that allows just one post on the front page, but can display multiple posts on category, tag, archive and search pages.

    Is there such a beast?

The blog I need help with is billbennett.co.nz.

Each themes is coded differently. Some display full posts in categories and some do not. Generally speaking if you set 1 post to display on the front page then that’s also what you get in the Archives and Categories pages too. Here’s a list by theme.

The number of posts per page is set in Settings > Reading. Currently that setting applies to all post pages: you cannot set a certain number for the main page and a different number for category or archive pages.

Yes, that’s the one. I’m using Twenty-ten with custom CSS. It looks great (in my humble opinion) but the Archives and Categories are unwieldy.

Yes. On the self-hosted site I hacked the php to do this, I guessed there may be a theme which allows a single front page.

Well I am sorry but the way it is is the way it is. We cannot edit templates and themes and what you want can’t be done by CSS editing.

    Fair enough.

It was worth a try :-)

    Thank you.

    Exceptions:
Fadtastic displays the latest post in full and the rest as titles only.
Hemingway displays the latest two posts.
DePo Masthead displays the latest three posts.

    Special main page:
    The Morning After
Twenty Eleven – showcase page template.
    Nuntius – news template.

Also Duotone, but that’s for photoblogging only.

Wow panaghiotisadam, you certainly know your way around the themes.

I checked them all out, it looks like Twenty Eleven might be the best for me needs. I’ll be exploring that later today.

    Thanks.
