Site still not indexed in Google after 3 months
I created the above site in Early July (2nd July is the date on many of my pages). I was not particularly in a hurry for it to be indexed by Google so I did not take any of the steps to speed up discovery being happy that in 4-6 weeks it would be indexed.
However it is now late September and so > 6 weeks has passed. My site is still not indexed. Why is this?
The blog I need help with is shetlandbayofplentynz.wordpress.com.
Hi there, I checked your site settings and also the robots.txt file that the search engines look at as everything looks normal.
You only have two posts on your site, so it may be that with your site only being 3 months old, and a lack of regular posts, that the search engines simply don’t think your site has enough for them to crawl regularly. I would suggest making regular posts, perhaps once or twice a week for a month or so so that the search engines will see the incoming notifications of new content and get more interested in your site.
I also see that you have not verified your site with the search engines, which can help. See the following support page for more on doing that with the major search engines.
Hmm, it’s not a blog, it’s a website. Almost everything is pages. The pages have changed fairly regularly during the 3 months of its existence. Is that not enough for search engines? They don’t know the difference between a page and a blog post surely? It’s all pages to them right? Also, I read that WordPress did everything needed to wake up the search engines to your existence? Is that not the case anymore?
I have requested a link to my site be added to another website which is indexed, so perhaps that will help when the crawlers come across it.
I will try verifying it as you suggest to see if that helps. Shame the article I read that said you just have to wait 4-6 weeks didn’t mention that was needed. I would have done it earlier.
@moraghughson normally it isn’t necessary. But it will let you know when Google crawled the site, which is helpful in troubleshooting.
Let us know too what terms you’re using to try to find the site, too, and whether you’ve shared a link to the site anywhere else.
Google Search Console (GSC) has it’s own feature which allows you to tell Google which URLs on your site should be indexed. Using that feature is more reliable than hoping Google will discover and index a site on its own.
Once you’ve verified the site in GSC, you can expedite indexing by using the “Fetch as Googlebot” and “Request Indexing” feature.
I’d also recommend manually submitting your sitemap to Google.
Your sitemap can be found at https://shetlandbayofplentynz.wordpress.com/sitemap.xml
@supernovia, I just use the following search terms to determine whether the site has been indexed yet
I have just yesterday asked another related website to add a link to us, but they haven’t made the change yet. Tbh I was waiting until my site showed up in Google before I did anything like, which is probably counter intuitive!
Ah! Well, I’ll bet the tips you’ve found here will really help. Give them a go, then wait a few weeks and see what happens. I think you’ll be glad. :)
