Does it say that you can here? http://en.support.wordpress.com/slideshows/
Currently the slideshow will only display all photos attached to a post or page. Please see here for all the slideshow choices we have. Be sure to note those under “Related”.

Yes it’s no. Too bad, eh? Best wishes dickiebo.

But the answer is yes if you upload images to Flickr and use the Flickr slideshow or another 3rd-party slideshow. See here:

Thanks very much indeed for your help, folks. Must say that as soon as I saw the coding on Pana’s article, I knew that it would be beyond me. And so it has proved. Never mind, eh?
PS. If you would like to see what I ended up with, I have left it at the very bottom of my sidebar, for you to have a Xmas laugh! lol.

@dickiebo: First I don’t laugh when someone doesn’t succeed the first time he tries something strange, second I don’t believe it’s beyond you. Could you please link to your Flickr page? The code in your widget says “dickiebo1”, but Flickr says there’s no such user.

Hello Pana. I only went onto Flickr as a result of your advice and these are the two ‘addresses’ that I have. For your info, the slideshow that I was attempting to put onto my sidebar, is the ‘Page’ on my blog entitled Awards.

So, this is the shortcode you must paste in your widget:
    [gigya src="http://www.flickr.com/apps/slideshow/show.swf?v=71649" width="249" flashvars="offsite=true&lang=en-us&page_show_url=/photos/48850791@N05/sets/72157628512509081/show/&page_show_back_url=/photos/48850791@N05/sets/72157628512509081/&set_id= 72157628512509081&jump_to=" allowFullScreen="true" ]
Note: some of the images will show up in poor quality because the originals are too small.

Close but….no cigar! Nothing there! I think that my errors are at Flickr and I shall have to try and sort that out first.
I can;t thank you enough for your patience, help and expertise. Many thanks indeed.

If your errors were at Flickr I would have told you so! Your slideshow is working fine in my tests blog at the moment. Seeing your sourcecode, my guess is that you didn’t copypaste the shortcode directly from here into the widget: did you paste it in a word processor first?

You truly are a genius! No kidding.
My slideshow is absolutely dreadful due to the ‘sizing’ of the images, but I can now work on that. Many, many thanks.
