spam a lot
I’ve been getting spammed an outrageous amount in the last two days. WordPress used to catch these and never bother notifying me of them, but now I get about 20 emails a day about new comments that are spam and I have to personally mark as such. I’m not even getting hits on my page, just spam comments. Is your site’s spam blocker on the fritz, or is that just the way it’s going to be now?
The blog I need help with is revkevnye.com.
Twenty spam comments a day is a tiny number. I get hundreds and on self hosted sites we get thousands daily. The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam.
On the spam that Akismet catches it takes only seconds to click “empty spam” and you don’t even have to click “empty spam” if you don’t want to. Akismet will maintain comments it has caught for 15 days from the time they were received, and then it will delete the comment automatically.
If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it’s spam.
Note: The worst of all spam containing malware and viruses is not sent to us. It’s removed as it could bring down many blogs if opened.

I have been getting about 9000 (yes you read that right, 9000) or more a day. They seem to be bounced emails and out of office replies even though I have not sent an email to the addresses concerned. I am getting sick of it, and it has only happened since I had an email telling me that someliked my blog post.
Take a very close look at the comments you have approved please.
If you approve a single spam comment that can turn your blog into a spam magnet that will be targeted over and over again.
I have not approved any comments, but if I had, would they have my email address?
No. If you post comments on other blogs and provide an email address then those bloggers have it. I don’t consider this to be a big deal as I have throwaway email addresses for my blogs. My primary personal email address is only provided to family and close friends.
