Spam getting through filters
For the last few days I’ve been getting a lot of obvious spam pingbacks walking straight through Akismet’s filter and showing up for me to deal with by hand in my email. Most are caught for moderation, but some have even made it to the site as approved comments before I could delete them. In the last day I’ve had to delete over a dozen pingbacks on a single post.
Is Akismet broken? Is there something I’ve inadvertently set on my recent posts telling it not to filter comments and pingback? I’m getting tired of having to do this by hand.
The blog I need help with is unapologetic.wordpress.com.
Akismet is a learning engine and sometimes needs our help to adapt to the latest trends.
If you continue to mark the missed spam as “spam,” Akismet will eventually adapt.
Sometimes spammers hire an army of new people and thus slip under the radar for three or four days. Just keep spamming them and it’ll become automatic. Akismet is crowd-sourced. I’m having to kill the same guy four times a day because someone out there is un-spamming him just as fast.
I’m also noticing this banner sometimes (not always) when I mark these items as spam:
Akismet has detected a problem. A server or network problem prevented Akismet from checking 1 comment. It has been temporarily held for moderation and will be automatically re-checked in 19 mins.
This is evidently not a transitory problem, since it’s been cropping up for at least a week now. Is it on my end? WordPress’? Akismet’s?
That’s rather strange.
Just to clarify, are you seeing this on a WordPress.com blog, or a self-hosted WordPress.org blog with the Akismet plugin?
I got the same error message yesterday. The only differences were the numbers. Mine said 4 comments and recheck in 15 minutes.
I just checked and this is normal behavior, but should happen infrequently.
If server fails to connect to Akismet for whatever reason, the comment is scheduled to be re-checked later.
Thanks for checking. :)
