Started a free blog, site went viral, how can I make money?

  1. deangarrison99

I had a post go viral which is getting 20,000 hits a day and I am frustrated. We started this blog for fun but I am also currently unemployed so I would love to be able to make money off of this site if I can. At the same time I don't have a lot of money to spend on upgrades so I am really frustrated. From what I understand about wordads, it is not much revenue for the traffic generated. Is there a way I can monetize this site without paying a large amount for upgrades? I had an article go viral and have received 180.000 hits in the last 5 days. I feel that I just lost a lot of potential income and by time I figure things out it may be too late to catch the traffic from this article, but at the same time I'd like to be prepared if it happens again. I am looking for anything creative that I can do. I don't want to write book reviews, but can I still sell related books from amazon? I am not talking about cluttering the site, just one or two little links in the sidebar that are related to my topic.

The blog I need help with is

  2. I apologize in advance for posting what you probably do not want to hear. There is only one advertising program called WordAds at and it’s for blogs on their own domains. Aside from a blog being accepted into WordAds no blogger initiated advertising, retailing or reselling the work or products created or services provided by anyone other than yourself is allowed on free hosted blogs. E-commerce transactions via shopping carts and the like cannot be conducted on free blogs from and being free hosted by Paid content and/or sponsored content is not allowed.

On free hosted blog we can use a contact form and/or a PayPal donation button for sale of only products or services created or provided by ourselves.

If you do require an ecommerce site, advertising, affiliate links, paid or sponsored content you can hire a web host and get a free software install from

Super fast response Timethief. I have heard that amazon links are allowed. Is that not the case? My understanding is that some minor revenue producing can happen with my own products (I have none but could work on that for the future) or with related amazon links, but I am not sure if I can link something from amazon if it rests outside of a review. I understand my options are close to zero, so I am just looking for a slither of hope if anyone can provide one. Either way, thank you so much for your prompt and courteous response.

  4. Basically, no, you can't link to Amazon with affiliate links if it's outside of a review or the main point of an article. That's just ads, and it's not allowed.

  5. Enjoy your success instead of worrying about money you couldn't have made on a free blog anyway ;) and then, if you this is something you'd like to money off (as it would seem you could) but you're broke right now, borrow a small amount from a friend or parent to get your own domain and the necessary upgrades. In the end it will probably be worth it. Best of luck!

  6. I agree with getting your own domain, but the only upgrade that allows paid ads here costs $500 per month.

Thanks you have been so helpful. The $500 a month upgrade is what we will be shooting for. I was afraid that was my best option. My goal is to increase traffic now and shoot for that. I could come up with the money myself but being self employed and having less than $1500 in savings, I need to make sure the move is prudent. To commit to $500 a month would probably not pay off yet, but if we get to 100,000 hits a day I think it can easily. Now we just have to drive toward that. It may take a year but at least I know my options. Thank you all so much for taking the time to answer.

  8. With only one post going viral, I doubt this is worth it.

  9. It costs a lot less than $500/month to buy a domain and get hosting. If you use one of the hosts listed at, you probably can get automatic software installation too.

  10. Hire a web host, and set up a install for one viral post! You have got to be kidding. That's not good advice IMO.

  11. Worse still you drug a thread that''s over a month old out of the searchbox to provide that advice and bump this old thread above active threads wherein blogger have serious outstanding issues that they need help with - good grief!

  12. With the type of content you run, your best bet is leveraging that into something more long-term - such as creating a following and branching out onto other social media sites before monetizing. You'd obviously want to own your own domain though at the end of the day.

  13. The blogger who posted this thread on January 9th has not returned to it, so who do you think you are providing your advice to?
