Starting a blog and replacing my current website on my own server / domain

  1. I have a website,, however, I want to scrap that completely and use a wordpress theme that I just purchased from as my website / blog. I'm confused as to what is next and what I need to do on my end.

The blog I need help with is

  2. You will need to find someone to host your site. Then you upload WordPress.ORG software to the site and upload / activate the theme you purchased. Then you can export your WordPress.COM blog to import into your new site.
    differences between wp.ORG and wp.COM
    finding a host:
If you have subscribers and followers to transfer to your new site, then you will also need Jetpack so staff can move them for you.

  3. I see your site is empty so you won't need to export anything. Also you might find Jetpack useful for lots of things, but you won't need it to transfer followers. Make your current site private so you can keep using it for jetpack.

You will have to change your domain mapping.

  4. Thank you!

So I downloaded the .org software, and I have a subdirectory in my ftp called blog ( where I want the blog to be for now until I'm ready for it to take over the whole domain.

    Now what do I do?

  5. You'll have to upload your theme as well. From now on, you are in the WordPress.ORG realm where you go to their forums for help.

You'll be able to add plugins posts pages and media from your admin panel there. It can be confusing at first: be sure you have a back-up system so if you make a mistake you don't have to start all over from scratch. I use vaultpress but there are others.

  6. Have you uploaded the wp.ORG software to your site? You need that before activating a theme.

  7. Okay, I've dropped all of the files on the server, but I don't know what it's talking about when it refers to the Database Details...where do I get / create those details? Sorry, I'm new to all of this...

  8. Sorry, but I'm not an expert on When I've done it it was a simple matter of starting the software and going: my host has one click installation of software. So I cannot advise what you'd do.

There are lots of "getting started" articles in their forums.
