Stupid questions using WordPress theme for a digital news media under planning.
-
Hello, I want to start a digital news media company shortly. Of course it is a big step and lots of planning (and money) needed. The planning in underway now mainly on the content sourcing and website creating perspective. Eventually we will use WP platforms (WP VIP service with relevant Plugins) and the website will be hosted externally. In the meantime to show it to the possible investors, I want to develop a prototype website using one of the WP Premium Themes available with wordpress.com, such as MODERN NEWS or CHRONICLE. It might all sound very naïve questions (I am a non-techy), by choosing one of these themes, I have 4 questions – (a) I have the URL registered via godaddy.com, can I use the same URL at WP? In the future, where I will need to move the content from WP to an external server, is it possible? (b) will I be able to activate User login for the content contributors for them to come and post content/ pics, (c) will I be able to have a banner advertising space/ AdSense banner space, (d) will we be able to have a user sign up form and if we can do, where the database gets stored, in what format?

Hi there.
First, be aware that WordPress.com and WordPress VIP are radically different, both in terms of functionality and regarding the Terms of Service. Below I answer your questions in terms of what is possible and allowed on WordPress.com. For information regarding WordPress VIP, please contact them directly as we do not provide support for WordPress VIP in this forum: https://vip.wordpress.com/
Also make sure you understand the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
(a) I have the URL registered via godaddy.com, can I use the same URL at WP?
Yes, but you’ll need to buy the domain mapping upgrade to do that: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
In the future, where I will need to move the content from WP to an external server, is it possible?
Yes, you can export all content created on WordPress.com in an XML format which can be imported to any self-hosted WordPress.org install. If you plan to go from WordPress.com to WordPress.com VIP, though, it might not be necessary as the VIP staff will most likely take care of that for you. Ask on the VIP site about that. https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/
Also note you can’t export your theme, settings or customisations, but again if you transfer to VIP that might not be an issue.
(b) will I be able to activate User login for the content contributors for them to come and post content/ pics
On a WordPress.com site you can add other users, but they will need to have their own WordPress.com accounts first and will access your site’s dashboard via their own accounts. There’s no facility here for visitors to register an account directly with your site, nor is it possible to have members-only areas on the actual website. https://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/
(c) will I be able to have a banner advertising space/ AdSense banner space,
Not on WordPress.com, no. Please see the WordPress VIP page for their terms regarding this. http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/
(d) will we be able to have a user sign up form and if we can do, where the database gets stored, in what format?
See my answer to (b). This is not possible on WordPress.com.

Dear kokkieh, thanks very much your taking time off to answer my queries. One more question, how do I activate a ‘Contact us’ form (pretty much the same as you have on your blog)? Or, how are you could apend your TWEEKLY feed or FB feeds on to the page? Appreciate your assistance.

You can add a contact form to any post or page using the Contact Form shortcode. You can insert the shortcode manually, but the easier option is to go to the WP-Admin dashboard and edit/create your posts and pages from there, as you can insert a contact form with simply clicking a button from that editor. Instructions here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/
The Twitter and Facebook feeds you see at the bottom of my site are widgets. These only show your own content, not content from those people you follow. The Facebook Pages widget only works for Pages, not personal profiles. You simply add it, give it your page’s URL and you’re all set. For the Twitter widget you’ll first need to go to Twitter and generate a widget ID in your settings there. Then you paste that ID into the widget on WordPress.com, and you’re good to go.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/twitter-timeline-widget/
https://en.support.wordpress.com/facebook-integration/#facebook%C2%A0page-pluginTweekly is not supported on WordPress.com (VIP might be different). If you have the HTML code for a widget you can try adding it to a text widget, but be aware that if it contains any Flash or JavaScript code (as feeds widgets invariably does) it won’t work as that type of code isn’t allowed here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/create-your-own-widget/
